On the afternoon of July 26, President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia Samdech Techo Hun Sen issued a special message, announcing that he would step down from the position of Prime Minister and transfer the leadership of the new Government to his son, Dr. Hun Manet.

In a message broadcast on mass media, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said he had an audience with King Norodom Sihamoni to report on the organization of the recent 7th National Assembly election, as well as the arrangement of the upcoming new Government apparatus.
Accordingly, in the recent general election, preliminary statistics showed that 84.58% of voters went to the polls, the highest number compared to recent elections. This shows that the Cambodian people are interested in choosing their leaders by voting for the political party they trust, demonstrating the political maturity of voters in the democratic process.
The Prime Minister thanked voters nationwide for their trust in the CPP, demonstrated by the fact that 82.30% of the votes were cast for the Party to lead the Government for the new term.
Mr. Hun Sen said that according to the decision of the CPP Standing Committee, after meeting with the King, he decided not to continue holding the position of Prime Minister.

Mr. Hun Sen said that Dr. Hun Manet will become Prime Minister in a few weeks. This process is carried out after there is consensus within the Party and Mr. Hun Manet has been elected to the National Assembly. After that, the King will issue a decree appointing the Prime Minister to the member of the political party that wins the majority of seats in the National Assembly.
According to Prime Minister Hun Sen, his resignation from the position of Prime Minister is for the peace of the people, in line with the fact that his father King Norodom Sihanouk had previously prepared very carefully and on time to give up the throne to the current King Norodom Sihamoni.
In a special message to the people on the afternoon of July 26, Prime Minister Hun Sen also said that after leaving the position of Prime Minister, he will still hold the position of President of the Cambodian People's Party and plans to run for the position of President of the Senate in the Senate election in February 2024.
The election of the 7th National Assembly of Cambodia on July 23 was assessed by domestic and international public opinion as having taken place well, orderly, without violence, freely, fairly and legitimately. The election process was attended by about 90,000 domestic observers, more than 600 international observers and about 1,500 reporters.
According to preliminary statistics, with the majority of voters' votes, the ruling CPP can win 120/125 seats in the new National Assembly.
