
The working trip was made at the invitation of the President of the Republic of South Africa, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, G20 President 2025, from November 21-23.
At the airport to welcome Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, on the South African side were the Minister (representing the Government), the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . On the Vietnamese side were the Vietnamese Ambassador to South Africa Hoang Sy Cuong, officers and staff of the Embassy.
This is the second consecutive year that Vietnam has been invited to attend the Summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in the world. This is a strong affirmation of Vietnam's prestige, position and increasingly important role, as well as the recognition and appreciation by partners, especially the G20, of Vietnam's development achievements and its substantial and responsible contributions to common world issues.
Attending this conference is an opportunity for Vietnam to continue affirming its consistent foreign policy as a reliable partner of the international community, ready to join hands to solve global issues in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding, contributing to the common development of humanity.

Based on the needs and practical experience of a developing, transitioning, high-growth, independent, self-reliant and deeply internationally integrated economy, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will share, evaluate and make important recommendations to contribute with other countries to building a fair, inclusive and sustainable international economic order and global economic governance system.
Within the framework of the conference, the Prime Minister will have many bilateral meetings with leaders of countries and international organizations to promote cooperation in strategic areas for Vietnam such as green transformation, digital transformation, innovation, strategic infrastructure development, high-quality human resource development, etc., thereby maximizing international resources to serve the country's development goals.

At the G20 Summit, as a Guest of the G20 South African Chair, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will share policy messages, focusing on a number of key key contents to contribute to efforts to promote world economic growth, minimize risks, and promote cooperation in strategic areas such as minerals, energy, and reform of the global trade, finance, and investment systems in the current period of reshaping and building global rules and regulations.
Through those specific messages, initiatives and proposals, the international community will have a clearer view of Vietnam, a country determined to innovate to enter an era of development; has been, is and will continue to be a reliable partner, increasingly proactive, positive, responsible and making every effort for peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development for humanity.

On the bilateral level, Vietnam and South Africa established diplomatic relations on December 22, 1993. Before that, Vietnam had relations with the ANC and the South African Communist Party; always supported the South African people's struggle against the apartheid regime and supported the democratic reform process. The two sides coordinated well at international organizations/multilateral forums.
South Africa is the largest economy in Africa, currently holding the G20 Presidency in 2025 and is a key member of the BRICS group, and is Vietnam's largest trade partner and export market in Africa. Total bilateral trade turnover in 2024 will reach 1.72 billion USD, of which Vietnam will export about 773 million USD, mainly including phones of all kinds and components, footwear, computers, electronic products and components, machinery, equipment, tools and other spare parts... and import about 946 million USD, mainly coal, vegetables, precious stones and precious metals, ores and other minerals...
As of October 2024, South Africa has 20 valid investment projects in Vietnam, with an investment capital of 0.88 million USD, focusing on the fields of professional activities, science and technology, accommodation and catering services, processing technology, manufacturing and wholesale and retail. Vietnam has 4 investment projects in South Africa with a total capital of 8.865 million USD, ranking 43rd out of 81 countries and territories with investment projects of Vietnam.
