The truth about information related to medical waste management at Bach Mai Hospital

On the afternoon of April 28, Bach Mai Hospital informed that in recent days, some social media accounts have been exploiting an incident that happened 10 years ago to spread false information about the collection, management, and treatment of medical waste at Bach Mai Hospital.

The viral clip titled “Undercover detectives ambush Bach Mai Hospital morgue, revealing a crime more horrifying than fake milk and medicine that silently poisons the entire population,” features images cut and pasted from hospitals’ medical waste storage facilities, transport staff, and waste smuggled outside to be recycled into straws and household items that poison the community.

On the afternoon of April 28, speaking to the press, Associate Professor Vu Van Giap - Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital affirmed that the above information was fabricated, defaming the hospital and causing confusion for patients and their families. The hospital has sent a document to the Internal Political Security Department ( Ministry of Public Security ) and Hanoi City Police requesting an investigation to clarify the motives and purposes of the accounts posting unverified information causing public confusion. The hospital is determined to protect its reputation and use necessary legal measures if it detects acts of slander and defamation.

Dr. Truong Anh Thu - Head of Infection Control Department (Bach Mai Hospital) said that every day the amount of waste generated in the hospital is from 8-9 tons, of which non-hazardous waste is about 6-7 tons, hazardous waste with or without risk of infection is about 1.5 to 1.7 tons.

Hospital waste management is carried out in accordance with legal regulations, within the premises, always complying with regulations on medical waste management within the premises of medical facilities, on environmental management. Regarding wastewater, the hospital has a modern medical waste treatment system, meeting all wastewater sources generated.

In addition, the hospital regularly organizes training for staff on both theory and practice of waste classification at source. With the harmful effects of radiation waste at the cancer center, it is collected and stored separately, using lead-lined pipes until the danger is gone, then it is handed over to the treatment unit.

Regarding machinery and equipment with radiation sources, Dr. Thu said that the hospital has established a Radiation Safety Board and is responsible for radiation safety, regularly inspecting machinery to ensure it is within the safety range for medical staff, patients, relatives, and surrounding residents.

In particular, annually, the Hospital conducts training, coaching, communication, and dissemination to employees and related parties about regulations on medical waste management; Allocates funds for medical waste management (implementation of service contracts for collection, transportation and treatment of hazardous medical waste; Contracts for collection, transportation and treatment of normal solid waste; Contracts for operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment systems at the Hospital...

Mr. Le Hoang - Deputy Director of the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health) said that through the actual inspection, it was shown that the hospital complied with the provisions of the law on environmental protection related to medical waste Circular No. 20/2021/TT-BYT on medical waste management in medical facilities.

“We have not detected any violations by the hospital regarding the classification, collection and treatment of medical waste. Bach Mai Hospital has a license to treat medical waste in the hospital and with the surrounding hospital cluster. The hospital’s environmental protection work meets the requirements of regulations and applies advanced methods to treat wastewater,” the Deputy Director of the Department of Disease Prevention emphasized.

Associate Professor Dao Xuan Co - Director of Bach Mai Hospital affirmed that with more than 100 years of establishment and development, Bach Mai Hospital has become the leading specialized hospital in the country. Every day, the hospital's doctors receive and examine 8,000-10,000 patients, including about 4,000 inpatients. Although the hospital is still limited when resources are not enough to build new facilities, the hospital still determines and implements the motto of renovation and repair to ensure the criteria of "Bright, green, clean, beautiful, safe", helping people to enjoy quality medical services, following the correct procedures and treatment regimens.

Therefore, the hospital hopes and requests that the authorities verify and strictly handle organizations and individuals who deliberately resurrect old information to discredit the hospital in particular and the health sector in general./.
