Although the summer movie season has just begun, Hollywood has already witnessed an "earthquake" called "Lilo & Stitch" when the touching and humorous live-action film of Disney continued to hold the top position at the North American box office for the second consecutive week, with an impressive revenue of 63 million USD over the weekend.
Statistics show that as of June 1, the film has earned 280.1 million USD in the North American market, bringing its total global revenue to 610.8 million USD - officially surpassing "Sinners" to become the second highest-grossing domestic film in 2025.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Dean Fleischer Camp, “Lilo & Stitch” is not simply a remake, but a fresh, emotional take on the special friendship between a lonely Hawaiian girl and a runaway alien.
Not only conquering young audiences, the film also touches the hearts of adults with its message about family, healing and gentle connections that transcend all limits.
According to data from Comscore, the post-Memorial Day weekend in North America recorded a total revenue of $149 million, up more than 120% compared to the same period last year - an optimistic number that shows that audiences are gradually returning to movie theaters.
The second place at the North American box office last week continued to belong to the action blockbuster "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning," with $27.3 million earned from 3,861 theaters in the US and Canada.
After two weeks of release, the film has earned $122.6 million domestically, while adding $76.1 million internationally — including $25.2 million from China — for a global total of $353.8 million.
Although it has not reached the profit threshold due to the production cost of up to 400 million USD, the 8th film of the "Mission Impossible" franchise still shows a great influence on movie lovers.
The biggest surprise of the past week was the impressive appearance of the rookie “Karate Kid: Legends” - a martial arts film from Sony, which achieved an opening revenue of 21 million USD from 3,809 theaters.
The film marks the reunion of Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, as they both train a completely new character, Li Fong - a kungfu prodigy played by Ben Wang.
Although critics have given mixed reviews, audiences have been extremely positive, with an A- on CinemaScore and 4.5 stars on PostTrak. With a budget of only $45 million, the film is poised to make a killing in the coming weeks as there are no competitors in the genre.
In fourth place, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” continued to drag audiences into the fateful vortex with $10.8 million, bringing the total global revenue to $229.3 million, the highest in the “Final Destination” series (not accounting for inflation).
Coming in at number 5 is the only horror film released in North American theaters this past week – “Bring Her Back” . The second work by twin directors Danny and Michael Philippou (who rose to fame with 2023’s “Talk to Me” ), it grossed $7.1 million.
