The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just recognized the art of Ca Dao (dance) of the Co people and the Tet nga ra (Sa ni) of the Co people (both in Tra Bong district, Quang Ngai province) as national intangible cultural heritage.
Ca Dao art is a unique dance, closely associated with the gong art of the Co people in Tra Bong district. This is an important part of the cultural and spiritual life of the people, expressing their own identity and vitality.
Ca Dao performances often take place during major village festivals, attracting everyone to participate and immerse themselves in the common cultural space. This is an opportunity for community members to interact, strengthen solidarity and cohesion. Ca Dao dance is also a catalyst for young men and women to become husband and wife.
Ca Dao art is not only entertaining but also contains the deep wishes of the Co people. The dance movements, especially the movement of spreading arms and looking up to the sky, express the wish for good things, a prosperous life, and a bountiful harvest.
According to cultural researcher Cao Chu, former Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province, Ca Dao art is not only a form of performance but also the breath and soul of the Co people, encapsulating their entire spiritual life, beliefs and identity.
This art has contributed to maintaining the vitality of traditional culture, and is also a bridge between the past, present and future of the Co people.
The Rice Harvesting Festival is also one of the important traditional festivals and is considered the main festival of the Co people in the mountainous district of Tra Bong. The Rice Harvesting Festival takes place at the end of October or the beginning of November of the lunar calendar, after the people have completed the upland rice harvest.
This is an occasion for them to summarize a rice season, express their deep gratitude to the gods, especially the rice god, mountain god, river god, stream god, who have blessed them with a bountiful harvest and a prosperous life. This is also an occasion for descendants to express their respect and remember the merits of their grandparents and ancestors who have passed away. They believe that their ancestors always watch over and bless their descendants' lives.
The offerings are very diverse, from agricultural products such as sacred rice, cakes, to livestock such as pigs, chickens...; along with that is the sound of gongs echoing throughout the mountains and forests, blending with the graceful and vibrant Ca Dao dances. Folk games such as rice pounding contests, cake wrapping contests, and stilt walking are also organized, contributing to making the atmosphere more bustling and jubilant...
According to artisan Ho Ngoc An in Tra Thuy commune, Tra Bong district, Tet Nga Ra is not only a simple agricultural festival but also a solid spiritual support, a place to express community cohesion, gratitude to nature and ancestors, and at the same time a means to preserve and promote the unique cultural values of the Co people through generations.
The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province informed that up to now, the whole province has 8 national intangible cultural heritages. In addition, Quang Ngai also contributed to the art of Bài Chòi in Central Vietnam - an intangible cultural heritage of humanity recognized by UNESCO./.
