The number of candidates taking the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi is 10 times that of other localities.

At the conference on guiding the entrance exam for grade 10 high school in the 2025-2026 school year, Director of the Hanoi Departmentof Education and Training Tran The Cuong said that this year, Hanoi has nearly 116,000 candidates registered to take the entrance exam for grade 10, including more than 102,800 candidates taking the general exam and over 13,500 candidates taking the specialized exam, including 268 independent candidates.

The entrance exam for grade 10 in Hanoi will take place on June 7 and 8 with the general system including 3 subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language. Students registering for the specialized school exam will take additional specialized subjects on June 9.

It is expected that around July 4-6, the Department of Education and Training will simultaneously announce the exam scores and grade 10 benchmark scores. Successful candidates will confirm their enrollment from July 10-12.

The number of candidates registering for the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi is 10 times higher than in other provinces and cities.

With a large number of candidates registering for the exam, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training reported to the city's exam steering committee to mobilize 15,173 officials and teachers to participate in exam supervision and more than 2,000 people to participate in exam marking. The Hanoi City Police also mobilized thousands of soldiers to support the exam.

The whole city has 201 examination sites with 4,411 examination rooms and 201 backup examination rooms in 30 districts, towns and cities.

Hanoi's 10th grade entrance exam is considered a tense competition for candidates to compete for a place in public schools.

This year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has assigned 79,740 quotas to 122 public and autonomous public high schools. Of these, 119 public high schools have been assigned 78,400 quotas, equivalent to 1,763 classes; 3 autonomous public high schools have been assigned 1,340 quotas with 32 classes.

Change some regulations in this year's 10th grade exam

In this year's 10th grade entrance exam, Hanoi has made some changes compared to previous years. Specifically, there are no longer specialized subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology, History, and Geography. Instead, there is Natural Science (with knowledge content for candidates taking the Physics, Chemistry, and Biology specialized classes), History and Geography for candidates taking the History and Geography specialized classes.

Test format: Candidates taking the Natural Science exam will do the test directly on the test paper. In previous years, only candidates taking the Foreign Language exam did it this way.

The test time for all specialized subjects is 150 minutes. Thus, Chemistry and Foreign Languages increase by 30 minutes compared to previous years.

Items candidates are allowed to bring into the exam room: Pens, rulers, pencils, erasers, set squares, graphing rulers, drawing tools, calculators without word processing function, no memory cards.

Compared to last year, the list adds drawing tools, graph rulers; removes Geography Atlas, Periodic Table, solubility table (used in Chemistry).

Five minutes before the end of the exam, the examiner will remind the candidates to check their registration number, information on the exam paper, and the test code on the multiple choice answer sheet. This content is not available every year.

Some remaining changes are related to the responsibilities of the invigilators, such as how to distribute the exam questions, how to draw lots to number the candidates, seal and preserve the exam questions...

Expected to add more than 1,500 places to public grade 10

According to the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the coming time, 3 new public high schools in the capital will come into operation and many new classrooms will be built.

"Therefore, the Admissions Council of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has decided to increase the rate of students entering grade 10 of public schools this year. Last year, the number of students entering grade 10 of public high schools in Hanoi was about 61%, this year we have increased it to 64%, not to mention the 3 high schools that the Department is inspecting and will grant operating licenses," Mr. Cuong told Vietnamnet.

These three new schools are Phuc Thinh High School (Dong Anh district), Do Muoi High School (Hoang Mai district) and a high school in Cau Giay district.

According to Mr. Cuong, for each of these high schools, the Department will try to assign a quota of 10-15 classes, about at least 450 students/school. Thus, the quota for public grade 10 in Hanoi this year will increase by about 1,500 to 1,700 students.

"In the coming time, the Department of Education and Training will assign additional 10th grade enrollment quotas to these public high schools. The Department will consider the option of "overflowing" enrollment after students have their 10th grade exam scores. However, the Department will also set a specific benchmark score, rather than taking all registrations, to ensure input quality.

Currently, the number of students admitted to grade 10 public schools in Hanoi in 2025 is 64%, adding the quota for these schools will certainly exceed the rate. This will contribute to meeting the needs and aspirations of students and parents," the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training added.
