(PLVN) - Animation has long been a neglected area of Vietnamese cinema. However, recently, positive signs of Vietnamese animation have been seen, as films with quality in both image and content have been released and are gradually reaching the international market.

The films are invested elaborately and passionately.

At the end of May, the 3D animated film “Trang Quynh - The Legend of Kim Nguu” was released in theaters, attracting audiences of all ages. The film was prepared for a year and a half, with the participation of famous animators in Vietnam. The film was inspired by the familiar character Trang Quynh in many oral folk tales from ancient times. The director renewed and built the main character in “Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu” as a brave, sincere boy with sharp intelligence, associated with strange challenges on the big screen...

Another film also released in May, ahead of International Children's Day, is "De Men: Adventure to the Swamp Village", the first 3D animated film inspired by the work "De Men Adventures" by the late writer To Hoai.

The two Vietnamese animated films released this summer have made progress in both content and image quality. The images in the films are much more eye-catching and vivid than before. In particular, the animation production team has taken advantage of the strengths of Vietnamese village culture, using literary materials familiar to many generations of students in our country to build the story content.

However, the reality is that although Vietnamese film studios make great efforts to release quality animated films and receive enthusiastic support from audiences, Vietnamese animated films are easily "knocked out" by foreign films.

Vietnamese animation gradually reappears in the international arena

It can be said that animated films are a "billion dollar" film market in the world , bringing producers a huge source of revenue. According to Box Office Vietnam's assessment in 2024, there will be two animated films in the top 10 highest-grossing films at the box office: "Doraemon: Nobita and the Symphony of the Earth" with over 147.5 billion VND and "Kungfu Panda 4" with 136.3 billion VND.

In recent years, with many efforts, Vietnamese animation, which had been absent from the international scene, has gradually returned. In 2020, the animation film "The Remains: Prequel" was screened at many film festivals and events in Greece, Japan, Italy, etc. Also in that year, the film won the Best 2D Film award at the Khem Animation Festival (USA) and reached the finals of the Montreal International Animation Festival (Canada).

Or the short animated film “U linh tich ky: Bot than ky” by Sunwolf Studio, directed by Dinh Anh Tuan, was presented at the 29th Stuttgart Film Festival (Germany) and the 48th Seattle Film Festival (USA). The film lasts just over 7 minutes, led by the image of a chimera, a bowl of central Vietnamese fish noodle soup, inspired by Hoi An ancient town... opening up a separate world, aiming to continue developing feature films and related video games in the future.

The film “Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island” marks the first time a Vietnamese animated film has been commercially exploited in the market. The film quickly became one of the top 3 animated films with the highest box office revenue in Vietnam, earning nearly 2 billion VND after less than 1 week of release, with more than 800 screenings and 15,000 tickets sold.

To develop Vietnamese animation to new heights, sharing with the media, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son, Standing Member of the Committee for Culture andEducation, said that there are 4 important issues that need to be focused on in the coming time: Promoting creative talent to produce worthy animation films; Continuing to promote the exploitation of national cultural values, creating a unique identity for Vietnamese animation films; Applying advanced, suitable technology, quickly approaching the world level. Finally, it is necessary to pay more attention to business skills so that films can reach global audiences, building a brand in the world animation market.
