Cross-border e-commerce identified as a lever for online exports

Sharing at the 2024 E-commerce Connection and Development Forum, Ms. Le Hoang Oanh - Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy said that in recent years, cross-border e-commerce has grown rapidly. If it reached 1,900 billion USD in 2021, it reached 2,300 billion USD in 2023 and is expected to reach 7,938 billion USD in 2030.

According to the Director, cross-border e-commerce is identified as a lever for online exports. According to the 2023 E-commerce Report of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, 13% of enterprises use e-commerce websites/applications for import and export purposes. Of these enterprises, 53% export through e-commerce trading floors, 47% export through self-built websites/applications.

In addition, 60% of surveyed enterprises said that the value of imported and exported goods through e-commerce accounts for 10-30%. Markets that commonly apply e-commerce for export activities include: Korea (45%), Japan (40%), China (38%), etc.

Sharing in the Discussion section, Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huyen - Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy shared that, in order to support the business community, especially small and medium enterprises facing many difficulties in online export, the Department's leaders assigned the Center for E-commerce Development to research and develop the Online Export Ecosystem (Ecomex) with specific solutions, to realize the Government 's orientation, joining hands to support Vietnamese enterprises to bring products with export potential to access international markets via e-commerce.

Along with that, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy regularly organizes training programs on e-commerce in general and cross-border e-commerce in particular, with the goal of improving the quality of human resources, disseminating new regulations, procedures and knowledge to state management subjects and the business community.

The forum was attended by 500 domestic and international delegates.

At the Forum, the leaders of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy also proposed a number of orientations for cross-border e-commerce development in the coming time, namely: Developing green and sustainable cross-border e-commerce; strengthening the management of e-commerce import and export goods via express delivery; connecting tax declaration for cross-border e-commerce; Issuing and implementing the national e-commerce development plan for the period 2026 - 2030 focusing on developing and optimizing the logistics and payment systems serving cross-border e-commerce...

Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Deputy General Director shared at the Forum

As one of the largest logistics service providers in Vietnam participating in the Forum, the representative from Vietnam Post shared experiences and solutions to help e-commerce businesses overcome difficulties in international delivery of goods. Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Deputy General Director of the Company said that Vietnam Post has recently launched a pilot e-commerce platform specializing in agricultural products (nongsan.buudien.vn) with the mission of bringing to consumers across the country agricultural products that are selected specialties, high quality, imbued with national cultural identity and aiming to export to potential foreign markets such as China, Korea, Japan, etc.

Sharing in the Discussion section, the representative of Vietnam Post emphasized the role of quality logistics services, technology infrastructure and secure payment solutions in supporting Vietnamese enterprises to expand exports through e-commerce. The representative of Vietnam Post affirmed its commitment to accompany enterprises in providing integrated services from transportation to international freight forwarding, meeting the requirements of the global market.

Opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to promote exports through cross-border e-commerce

In addition to the presentations of domestic speakers, the 2024 E-commerce Connection and Development Forum also has the participation of experts from State management agencies, enterprises, and associations from Singapore, Korea, China, etc.

Considered a bridge between China and Southeast Asia, Yunnan is also an important link in e-commerce cooperation between Vietnam and China. Sharing at the 2024 E-commerce Connection and Development Forum, Mr. Liu Liang, representative of Yunnan Department of Commerce, Chairman of Yunnan E-commerce Association, stated that agricultural products, handicrafts, clothing and footwear are Vietnamese products with great potential in the Chinese market.

“We see that Vietnam’s strong products such as agricultural products, handicrafts, clothing and footwear have great potential in the Chinese market. For example, Vietnamese dragon fruit, cashew nuts and coffee beans have appeared on the dining tables of Chinese consumers through Yunnan’s cross-border e-commerce platforms. In the future, with the optimization of logistics and policies, the market share of these products will continue to expand,” said Mr. Liu Liang.

To promote online exports, Mr. Liu Liang recommends that Vietnamese enterprises need to do better in transportation, customs declaration, human resource training, customer approach... to quickly understand customer needs, analyze the right needs, and meet all customer desires.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Jang Woo Sung - Representative of the Export Advisory Committee of the Export Association of Gyeonggi Province (Korea) said that Vietnam's policy needs to focus on developing and improving logistics capacity and researching support solutions for online export businesses.

Forecasting that Vietnam's trade activities will grow strongly in the coming years, Mr. Yap Kwong Weng - CEO of Vietnam Superport said that China, the United States and South Korea are Vietnam's leading trade partners, playing an important role in expanding trade activities on digital platforms. Regarding the solution to promote logistics in cross-border e-commerce, the CEO of Vietnam Superport emphasized that with a location only 40km from Hanoi and 18km from Noi Bai International Airport, Vietnam SuperPort ensures quick access to air and sea routes, giving businesses advantages in reducing transportation time and logistics costs; seamless connection to the developing China - ASEAN corridor.

After the Discussion on opportunities for cross-border e-commerce development for Vietnamese products, the Representative of the Unit assigned to research and develop the Ecosystem (Center for E-commerce Development) and a number of domestic and foreign enterprises signed a MOU committing to promote cross-border e-commerce, support Vietnamese small, medium and micro enterprises to seek online export opportunities, and bring Vietnamese goods to more international markets thanks to e-commerce.

The 2024 E-commerce Development and Connection Forum has the participation of partners such as SuperPort, Vietnam Post (VnPost) and more than 50 enterprises participating in the exhibition, creating opportunities for trade connection, helping domestic enterprises seek business opportunities, and promoting online exports in the coming time.
