Hydroelectric power plants run out of water, thermal power plants reduce capacity, power supply in the North is very 'tense'

According to Thanh Nien 's information , the power supply in the North during the peak of widespread severe heat is in a very difficult state as both hydroelectricity and thermal power are facing difficulties.

Lai Chau Hydropower Reservoir is having to run its machines at a minimum level below dead water level, posing many potential risks in operation.

Specifically for hydropower, updated information from hydropower reservoir management units shows that by June 3, a number of large hydropower reservoirs in the North have reached dead water levels, including many large reservoirs such as Lai Chau, Son La , Tuyen Quang, Ban Chat, Hua Na, Thac Ba. In particular, Lai Chau and Son La hydropower reservoirs have had to operate at minimum levels below dead water levels, posing many potential risks in operation.

According to statistics, the total unmobilized capacity of hydropower plants in the North is currently about 5,000 MW.

While many hydroelectric reservoirs are "in danger" due to a serious shortage of water for power generation, many coal-fired thermal power plants in the system are also experiencing reduced capacity or continuous problems due to continuous high-speed operation in prolonged hot weather conditions.

According to statistics from Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), as of June 5, the total capacity of the units with reduced capacity is about 926 MW, including: S1 Cam Pha; S1-S4 Hai Phong; S1 Mao Khe; S5 Pha Lai 2; S1-S4 Quang Ninh; S1-S2 Son Dong; S1-S2 Thang Long; S7 Uong Bi; S1-S2 Mong Duong 2; S2 Formosa Ha Tinh .

In addition, the total capacity of thermal power plants facing problems is about 3,250 MW, including: 1L-S1, 2L-S2, 1L-S3, 2L-S4 Pha Lai 1; S6 Pha Lai 2; S2 Cam Pha; S2 Nghi Son 2; S1 Vung Ang 1; S2 Mao Khe; S2 Thai Binh 2; S1 Nghi Son 1.

Previously, at the Government press conference on June 3, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said: "We need to frankly acknowledge that, although we talk about risks, in reality, there are some places and at certain times where there is a shortage of electricity for people's daily life and production and business activities of enterprises."

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked businesses to find ways to increase coal output for electricity production, regulate coal supply to increase the amount of coal for electricity generation by about 300,000 tons for May and about 100,000 tons for each following month (June, July); increase 18% of gas supply to the Southeast region and 8% of gas supply to the Southwest region for electricity production.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade directed EVN to urgently complete negotiations and sign power purchase contracts for transitional wind and solar power plants to soon put them into operation, connect to the grid and be able to generate electricity immediately to the national power system...
