Hydropower increases generation capacity

VnExpressVnExpress07/07/2023

Water in large hydroelectric reservoirs is higher than the dead water level, the National Power System Control Center (A0) has increased mobilization from this source to have enough electricity for the North.

On July 7, Center A0 said that water at most large hydroelectric reservoirs in the North increased 13-23 m above the dead water level (safe power generation threshold), enough water to generate electricity.

Specifically, the water flow to lakes such as Son La is the largest at 2,128 m3/s; Lai Chau 616 m3/s, Tuyen Quang 614 m3/s. Due to the large water flow to lakes, hydroelectric plants in the North are increasing their generating capacity.

A0 said that in the coming time, when the North enters the main flood stage, the water flow to the reservoirs will increase, so it is necessary to increase mobilization from hydropower. This will both ensure electricity supply for the North, and gradually lower the water level of the reservoirs, creating capacity to receive floods and prevent floods according to the inter-reservoir operation process.

The South has completely entered the rainy season, the weather is not as hot and sunny for a long time, so consumption has decreased and the water level of lakes in this area has improved compared to early May.

Therefore, according to A0, during the main flood season, coal-fired and gas turbine power plants will generate at a level appropriate to hydrological developments, actual hydropower reservoirs and electricity market operations.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) assessed that the Northern power system has returned to normal operation, with the ability to meet the average electricity demand of about 451.6 million kWh per day, of which the highest day can reach 470 million kWh.

However, to ensure power supply and prepare for unusual extreme heat, A0 recommends that coal-fired and gas turbine thermal power plants must ensure that generators and fuel are ready to respond when the system needs to be mobilized.

Since the end of May, Hanoi and many localities in the North have experienced days of power shortages due to the skyrocketing demand during the hot season. Hydropower, one of the two main sources of power supply for the North, has decreased in mobilization due to drought. At this time, thermal power plants have increased their mobilization to meet the demand for electricity for production and business. On average, the amount of electricity supplied from thermal power meets 48-50% of the country's demand, peaking at 53%.

Since the beginning of July, the mobilization from hydropower plants in the North has doubled, even tripled, compared to the end of May. For example, on July 6, the output from hydropower plants in the North reached more than 153 million kWh, nearly 30% of the electricity supply. This level increased by nearly 6 million kWh compared to July 5. Meanwhile, the output from thermal power decreased by about 4 million kWh, to nearly 259 million kWh.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said on July 4 that operating the national power system, especially in the North, in early July was still difficult due to prolonged heat, but "from now until the end of the year there will be no shortage of electricity to serve business production and people's daily life".
