Following the Executive Committee meeting on April 4, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced that Switzerland will host the 2025 European Women's Football Championship.
Switzerland beat strong candidates including France, Poland and the alliance of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden after two rounds of voting, thereby officially winning the right to host the event.
France successfully hosted the 2019 Women's World Cup.
However, the incident that occurred at last year's Champions League final at the Stade de France national stadium in Paris cost France this chance.
That final (between Liverpool and Real Madrid) was delayed for 37 minutes as fans struggled to get into the stadium after being squeezed into overcrowded spaces, leading to stampeding, as well as several clashes between fans and police.
Marion Daube, director of women's football at the Swiss Football Federation, said that thanks to its geographical location in the heart of Europe, the country has many advantages and is honored to be the host country of the tournament.
The 2025 Women's European Championship, featuring 16 teams, will take place in June and July 2025 in eight Swiss cities, including the capital Bern, Basel, Geneva, Zurich, St Gallen, Sion, Lucerne and Thun.
In 2008, Switzerland and Austria co-hosted the European Men's Football Championship (EURO 2008).
