According to AFP, tech billionaire Elon Musk confirmed that the Community Notes feature on his X platform was being "abused" in posts related to Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky. Billionaire Musk vowed to "fix" this error.
"Unfortunately, @CommunityNotes is increasingly being exploited by government groups and traditional media. I am working to fix this," Mr. Musk wrote on X on February 20.
Specifically, the feature allows users to add fact-checking or additional context to controversial posts. These will be evaluated by a group of other users, ensuring that the notes provided are objective and useful. If many users agree that the note is useful, it will be publicly displayed below the original post.
The statement came after Musk's close ally, President Trump, turned his back on his Ukrainian counterpart with a shocking public criticism on the night of February 19, calling Mr. Zelensky an "unelected dictator" that sparked a conflict between Kiev and Moscow, a rhetoric that has long been promoted by Russia.
This change of stance has prompted many social media users, including European officials and journalists, to speak out in defense of Ukraine and Mr. Zelensky on the X platform.
Many people have even used this very community notes feature to refute the allegations made by boss X and his supporters.

"It's clear that a poll conducted by Zelensky himself about his own approval ratings is not reliable!!" Mr. Musk said, adding: "In fact, he is hated by the Ukrainian people, which is why he refuses to hold elections."
According to the results of a survey conducted by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology this month, Mr. Zelensky achieved a 57% approval rating, guaranteeing the "legitimacy of the head of Ukraine."
The Kiev leader's term was supposed to end in May 2024, but because Ukraine has been under martial law since the conflict broke out in 2022 with Russia, elections cannot be held.
The community notes feature was deployed by Mr. Musk after acquiring the social network Twitter in 2022 and renamed it X until now. In addition, the billionaire has also changed many features related to safety and content moderation on this platform.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced last month that it would introduce a feature similar to Mr. Musk’s community notes instead of using professional fact-checking organizations.
