Since before the Lunar New Year 2025 until now, the price of durian in the province has been continuously low. Up to this point, the price of durian has not shown any signs of improvement. Recorded on June 7 in Cai Lay and Cai Be districts, the price of durian is still low.
Thai jackfruit is purchased by Mr. Truong's warehouse at a price of 1,000 - 3,000 VND/kg. |
Accordingly, warehouses buy Monthong durian (Thai) type A at about 75,000 VND/kg, type B at about 55,000 VND/kg. Ri 6 durian type A alone costs about 45,000 VND/kg, type B at about 30,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Tran Van Banh (Loi Thuan Hamlet, My Loi B Commune, Cai Be District) grows 4 hectares of Ri 6 durian trees that are 5 years old. A few days ago, his family sold nearly 4 tons of durian. The first grade durian was purchased by traders at 36,000 VND/kg, while the second grade durian was only half the price. Mr. Banh said: "This is the first durian crop my family has harvested, but the price is too low. At this price, my family is losing money, not enough to pay for fertilizer and pesticides."
Similar to the difficulties of durian growers, recently, the price of Thai jackfruit in the province has almost hit rock bottom, down to 1,000 VND/kg. Many gardeners can only shake their heads in disappointment because they have never seen the price of Thai jackfruit so low.
Growing about 400 Thai jackfruit trees, in recent days, Mr. Nguyen Van Hai (My Loi A commune, Cai Be district) has been sitting on hot coals, because the price of Thai jackfruit has dropped sharply. Mr. Hai said: "My family grows durian, then mixes Thai jackfruit in and plants it along the embankment. After harvesting, I transport the jackfruit to the warehouse to sell at 1,000 VND/kg.
This time, my family sold nearly 200 kg. Only when jackfruit is grown at a price of about 6,000 - 7,000 VND can gardeners make a living. At this price, gardeners are losing heavily. Jackfruit prices have started to decrease over the past month, but have been the lowest in recent days. I have never seen jackfruit prices this low before."
Guava prices are falling sharply. |
According to Mr. Le Van Truong, the owner of a jackfruit purchasing warehouse in My Loi B commune, Cai Be district, in recent days, the warehouse has purchased Thai jackfruit from people at prices ranging from 1,000 - 3,000 VND/kg. Accordingly, large jackfruit weighing 9 kg or more is priced at 3,000 VND/kg, 7 - 9 kg/fruit is 2,000 VND/kg, and under 7 kg/fruit is 1,000 VND/kg. Despite the low prices, the consumption situation is very difficult. Some jackfruits that cannot be consumed have to be brought back to get segments to sell to drying facilities.
According to Mr. Truong, not only Thai jackfruit, but also red-fleshed jackfruit prices are very low, fluctuating at 12,000 - 13,000 VND/kg, down about 10 times compared to the peak. Mr. Truong added: "The reason for the sharp drop in jackfruit prices is that the Chinese market is limiting "buying goods". I opened a jackfruit purchasing warehouse for 8 years now, and I have never seen jackfruit prices this cheap. Not only are gardeners suffering, but traders are also having difficulties."
For about half a month now, due to the favorable season, the price of dragon fruit in Tien Giang province has also dropped sharply. Growing 3 hectares of red-fleshed dragon fruit, Mr. Nguyen Van Hang (Binh Hung Hamlet, Binh Phan Commune, Cho Gao District) said that for about 2 weeks now, the price of dragon fruit has dropped sharply. There was a time when red-fleshed dragon fruit was sold in buckets for 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg, and traders did not even buy it. Farmers did not make a profit, so in some cases, they destroyed dragon fruit gardens to switch to other crops. As for his family, although the dragon fruit bears fruit, they have cut it down because the price is too low. In recent days, the price of dragon fruit has increased slightly to nearly 10,000 VND/kg. However, if any gardener has fruit to sell, they will make very little profit. |
Along with the prices of durian and jackfruit, in recent days, the prices of guava of all kinds in the province have also dropped sharply, almost hitting rock bottom. There are cases where traders come to the garden to buy for only 500 VND/kg. It is noted that in Cai Be district, many guava farmers are currently facing difficulties because the price of guava is at a very low level.
The price of guava fluctuates only from 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg, even 500 VND/kg, causing gardeners to suffer. Mr. Tran Van Phat (My Loi A commune, Cai Be district) said that the price of guava in the locality is currently falling sharply. His family has grown 3 hectares of guava mixed with durian, in recent days, guava varieties such as: Taiwanese, red flesh... only cost 1,000 VND/kg, causing him to suffer losses.
Mr. Huynh Van Be Em, Director of My Loi A Agricultural Cooperative (My Loi A Commune, Cai Be District) said that the current guava price in the area is very low. Specifically, the Cooperative is purchasing guava from people at a price ranging from 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg. The price of guava must be from 3,000 - 4,000 VND/kg for gardeners to break even.
According to Phan Thanh Son, Vice Chairman of Cai Be District People's Committee, at this time, the prices of most fruits in the area have dropped sharply. Specifically, Thai durian is currently purchased by traders in bulk at the garden for just over 50,000 VND/kg, Ri 6 for over 30,000 VND/kg.
At this price, gardeners make very little profit or break even. Thai jackfruit and guava are also at very low levels. Accordingly, the current area of durian in the whole district is about 10,000 hectares, jackfruit is more than 3,000 hectares and guava is several hundred hectares. Currently, low fruit prices are a common difficulty for many gardeners.
In fact, although it is a favorable season for many types of fruit, gardeners are not happy because of falling prices. It is easy to see that many of the province's main fruits are falling in price because consumption mainly depends on the Chinese market.
Many solutions to overcome the limitations for sustainable development of fruit trees have been proposed by the relevant agencies. However, the remaining problem is the implementation stage, which must be drastic and have a common voice from all parties so that agricultural products in general and fruits in particular no longer face the situation of "good harvest, low price, good price, bad harvest".
