Extreme weather affects power supply

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has just signed Official Dispatch No. 81 on the situation and solutions to ensure electricity supply during peak months in 2025 and the coming time.

According to the Prime Minister , in recent days, severe hot weather has occurred in the North and Central regions, causing high demand for electricity. The maximum load capacity on June 2 reached 51,672MW, the highest level ever.

Due to the impact of climate change, the weather situation is becoming more complicated, unpredictable and extreme, negatively affecting the assurance of electricity supply in the coming time, especially in the North.

Therefore, to meet the electricity demand during the peak months of 2025, the head of the Government requested relevant ministries, branches and units to focus highly, continue to organize and implement drastic, synchronous and effective solutions to ensure the electricity supply plan and operate the national power system in 2025.

In particular, it is necessary to ensure the spirit of "clear people, clear work, clear responsibility, clear authority, clear time, clear results", as a basis to ensure sufficient electricity supply for production, business and people's lives, and to absolutely ensure that there is no power shortage in any case.

Best preparation for power generation during peak months

Specifically, the Government leader requested the Minister of Industry and Trade to urgently organize and implement the plan to implement the adjusted power plan 8; take full responsibility before the Government and the Prime Minister for ensuring adequate electricity supply to serve production and business activities and people's lives.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade also needs to direct the strengthening of state management, along with inspection and supervision of the operation and urging the implementation of power source projects, to best prepare for power generation during peak months.

The Ministry also needs to regularly monitor and closely update weather developments to develop a reasonable method of operating the power system, ensuring the available capacity of power plants, and preparing plans to meet increased load demand during hot periods in the peak summer months.

Regarding power sources, hydropower plants need to monitor and closely follow the hydrological situation, implement flexible solutions with the goal of optimizing water resources, water storage plans, ensuring backup and maximum power generation capacity during the peak months of the dry season this year.

Coal-fired and gas-fired thermal power plants monitor the supply of coal and gas to avoid fuel shortages. Power plants proactively maintain machinery, reserve equipment and materials, and enhance the ability to exploit and store renewable electricity.

Wind and solar power plants enhance the ability to exploit, store and accumulate electricity to improve efficiency and supply capacity.

Power transmission and distribution grid management units must increase their on-duty forces, closely monitor and supervise the operation of the power grid within their management scope, especially at key routes, 500kV, 220kV, 110kV lines, and areas at high risk of incidents.

In addition, the Prime Minister assigned ministries and branches to strengthen monitoring and forecasting of weather conditions, reduce risks in operating the power system, prioritize maximum reserve water resources for power generation, and save electricity effectively.

In addition, focus on implementing power source and grid projects to ensure progress, quality, efficiency and environmental protection. Closely coordinate with ministries, branches and localities to remove difficulties in site clearance, connection, investment in power sources and grids.
