As the author of books that have caused a great stir in the Chinese literary world such as The Door of Life , The Fish in the Mountains, Stuck in Hangzhou, The Flying Book of Demons , etc., Nghi Nam Gioi has long been highly appreciated for his ability to exploit the distortions in human psychology through magical literary colors and unusual atmospheres.
Among them , The Door of Life is his most famous work, revolving around a group of 6 people trying to discover the cause of a murder that happened 13 years ago in a coal mine. They include 4 close friends, 1 cousin and the victim's ex-boyfriend.
With The Door to Life , Nghi Nam Gioi has created an impressive work, keeping the surprise until the end.
One day, a message is sent to the 6 people calling them back to Bach Thuy village to meet again. However, once there, they quickly fall into a "game" of having to find out who was behind the murder, when only 2 days are left before the countryside is submerged in the water storage of Phu Xuong hydroelectric dam. Will they be able to escape, and who is behind the above scheme?
In this work, the most outstanding point is that the author Nghi Nam Gioi used the plot motif of repeating itself over and over again by an endless loop that is somewhat novel as the foundation for the rhythm of solving the crime. With a strong sense of fantasy, the author gave the characters many choices, and each time they act, the result will bring out a new layer of facts.
This is similar to the concept of "ouroboros" (snake biting its own tail) in many cultures, which means infinity. In the book, every day the characters will return to the old timeline, from which there will be developments in the process of finding clues. This can be considered an important factor that creates appeal, when the way of solving the case, as mentioned above, is relatively new and quite rare in this genre.
Thinking of Men also incorporates many local influences very well, such as the retelling of the legend of the Mountain Demon – a spirit creature that imitates children’s laughter and often captures rural people to eat. The cause of the above murder, whether it was caused by humans or this creature, is also a big question waiting to be answered.
In addition, the lack of a crime-solving character also helps the novel escape the traditional motif of the detective genre. Accordingly, all 6 people will participate in this process, and then reveal their true selves as well as their views on the other person. This is similar to survival works, pushing the pace of the work to be more urgent and making it difficult to predict the next step.
Stylistically, The Door of Life is also written with a fast, short, and concise flow, making the story not boring but engaging. In addition, the addition of the limitation of the repetitive motif and the greater danger when the dam is about to overflow... also makes it impossible for readers to take their eyes off when the pages reach the end.
With 6 individuals and the main character's and each person's problems, a web of suspicion is also woven, making the work multi-layered and the secrets remain intact until the end. This creates the success of the work, when the crimes overlap, not easy to solve.
At the end of the work, the author also added a side story about the moon divers - meaning the divers who dived into what used to be a countryside before being submerged by a dam. Here, the old motif continues to appear, partly showing the complexity of humanity and the bottomless desires of humans that are still there until the end...
