120 bodies found, special disaster zone designated, emotional last text message from victim

As of 1:30 p.m. on December 29 (Vietnam time), the Korean Fire Agency announced that 120 bodies had been found in the tragic plane crash at Muan International Airport in the county of the same name in South Jeolla Province.

At the scene of the accident, firefighters are shifting from search and rescue operations to searching for bodies.

The South Korean fire department said: "Almost everyone on the ill-fated plane died, except for two people who were rescued alive."

Regarding the two survivors, fire department officials said they were a female passenger and a flight attendant. Both are currently being treated at a hospital in Mokpo City.

* Following the tragedy, Acting South Korean President Choi Sang Mok designated Muan as a special disaster zone.

The Presidential Office said it had convened an emergency meeting at 11:30 a.m. the same day (1:30 p.m. Vietnam time) to discuss the entire incident and report to Acting President Choi Sang Mok.

The meeting will be chaired by Presidential Chief of Staff Chung Jin Suk.

A South Korean official said that the meeting participants not only heard updates on the incident but also discussed countermeasures. In addition, additional meetings may be held if there are new developments.

Jeju Air CEO Kim E Bae has apologized to the victims of the plane crash that killed most of those on board.

Meanwhile, the government of South Jeolla Province, where the tragic plane crash occurred this morning, has raised the emergency alert to the highest level.

With this decision, all rescue forces and police were mobilized to the scene of the accident.

* In a related development, the Korean newspaper Nguoi dua tin reported the content of the last text message of a passenger on Jeju Air flight number 7C 2216.

The message sent at 9am read: "There's a bird stuck on the wing of the plane and we can't land... Should I leave my last words?"

The recipient of the above message - a relative of the victim - shared that they have not been able to contact their loved one since then.
