Vietnam pledges to continue making practical contributions to UN peacekeeping operations

On the morning of June 13, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet received Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) in charge of peacekeeping operations (PKO) on the occasion of his visit and work in Vietnam from June 12-14.

At the reception, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet expressed his delight at the continued development of the Vietnam-UN cooperation relationship, affirming Vietnam's strong support and commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the UN in global governance.

The Deputy Minister emphasized that Vietnam wants to increase its substantive and effective contributions to UN activities, including peacekeeping operations.

Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet said that Vietnam has deployed nearly 1,100 officers and staff to participate in UN peacekeeping activities and is one of the countries with the highest proportion of women participating among the countries sending troops (14-15%).

The Deputy Minister shared that one of Vietnam's important experiences in enhancing the effectiveness, practicality and support of host countries for UN peacekeeping activities is the ability to understand, connect, engage and support local people and communities.

On this occasion, the Deputy Minister asked the UN Deputy Secretary-General to continue to pay attention to and support Vietnam in deploying forces to participate in UN peacekeeping activities, including the first UN Peacekeeping Police Unit (FPU).

Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Vietnam's positive, practical and cooperative contributions to the UN in general and in the field of peacekeeping in particular, and emphasized that Vietnam's role, voice and contributions at the UN are very necessary and important to promote international cooperation and solidarity.

Mr. Lacroix expressed his impression when witnessing the professionalism, dedication, and efficiency of the Level 2 Field Hospital unit and the Engineering Team that Vietnam deployed to the Peacekeeping Missions in South Sudan and the Abyei region.

At the same time, he highly appreciated Vietnam's preparations for the implementation of the FPU, and wished to promote closer cooperation with Vietnam, especially in training and assigning officers to important positions at the UN Secretariat and at the Missions.

At the meeting, the two sides also discussed and assessed the UN Secretary-General's UN80 Initiative on reforming and streamlining the apparatus as very timely for the UN to enhance its operational efficiency and adapt well to new requirements and challenges in the current context, agreeing that UN member countries have a leading role in this process.
