According to the official announcement, the bad news came in the second half of the match in the opening round of the 2025-2026 Premier League. The man suddenly had health problems right in the stands. The stadium's medical team quickly arrived to provide emergency treatment, including artificial respiration (CPR) and the use of a defibrillator.
Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, the fan unfortunately did not survive. The sad news was confirmed shortly after the final whistle.
According to Sky Sports , Brighton's board considered suspending the match but ultimately did not do so.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber said: "This is a tragic end to the first game of the season. Our deepest and most sincere condolences go out to his family and friends." The club has pledged to support the family during this difficult time.
The match between Brighton and Fulham ended in a 1-1 draw. Matt O'Riley's opener for Brighton was equalised by Rodrigo Muniz in the final minute of injury time in the second half. However, the biggest thing that remained was not the result of the match, but the heartbreaking departure of a devoted fan in the home stadium.
