Summary of Project 8 “Achieving gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children”

STO - On the morning of May 20, in Hanoi, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union held an online conference to summarize Project 8 "Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" under the National Target Program for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas, 2021 - 2025 period. Comrade Nguyen Thi Tuyen - Member of the Party Central Committee, President of the Vietnam Women's Union chaired the conference.

Immediately after the Prime Minister approved the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas, 2021-2030, Phase I from 2021 to 2025, the Central Committee of the Association proactively and promptly coordinated with the Ethnic Committee to organize a conference to deploy Project 8 and the program. Every year, the Central Committee of the Association deploys the annual tasks of Project 8 in all levels of the Association and related sectors. In order to have synchronous and close coordination in implementing Project 8 locally, the Central Committee of the Association has issued documents to the Standing Committee of the Provincial/Municipal Party Committee, the Party Committee of the People's Committee of the provinces and cities to coordinate and direct the implementation. The Central Committee of the Association also established a Central-level Project Steering Committee and issued many documents directing, guiding, and proposing mechanisms and policies to implement Project 8.

The capital allocated for Project 8 is 2,387,812 billion VND, which has been deployed by the Central Women's Union and localities to ensure good implementation of project targets. Notably, provinces and cities have maintained and established 10,393 community communication teams (exceeding the set target by 15.5%) with the participation of 274,628 members. The model is a direct channel to effectively convey information and knowledge to the people; it is also a channel to grasp thoughts and aspirations, detect urgent social issues related to women and children and reflect them to the Women's Unions at all levels and local authorities. Women's Unions at all levels have established and consolidated 2,312 trusted addresses (exceeding the target by 131%) and have supported and advised about 110,100 women and children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. At the same time, 2,026 “Leaders of Change” clubs have been established and maintained (exceeding the target of phase 1 by 13%) and have been disseminated to 121,535 children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. The association at all levels has organized capacity building training for 4,164 female ethnic minority cadres (exceeding the target of phase 1 by 108%)...

Delegates shared, discussed, recommended and made many suggestions related to the implementation of Project 8 such as: Experience in consulting and directing, creating mechanisms for project implementation in localities; experience in effectively implementing models, project activities and solutions for sustainable maintenance of the model; contributions of Project 8 to the implementation of national strategic goals on Gender Equality for the period 2021 - 2030; some orientations for implementing the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the period 2026 - 2030; recommendations for the participation of the Vietnam Women's Union in the coming period.

The annual activities of Project 8 are designed and implemented in line with the general orientation of the program and are flexible and creative in implementation in accordance with the actual conditions of each locality. With the efforts and determination of the Women's Union at all levels and related units, many targets of the project have been achieved and exceeded the set plan. Since then, creating positive changes, initially changing the "thinking and working style" of people in particularly difficult communes and villages is a great success from the project's interventions, contributing to effectively solving a number of urgent social issues facing women and children and promoting gender equality in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.
