Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is taken to the Seoul Southern Detention Center on the evening of January 15.

According to Yonhap news agency, Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol was taken to the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, 22 kilometers south of Seoul, and will stay overnight before undergoing further questioning about the martial law he declared on December 3, 2024.

In a press release, the CIO said: "The interrogation of President Yoon Suk Yeol ended at 9:40 p.m. (7:40 a.m. Vietnam time)." According to the CIO, the leader refused to answer questions related to his declaration of martial law.

Yoon Suk Yeol will be questioned again on January 16, before investigators seek to request a formal arrest warrant. According to regulations, investigators must request a formal arrest warrant or release the president within 48 hours of arrest.

Yoon Suk Yeol is the first sitting president to be arrested in the history of the South Korean Constitution. He is currently facing charges of rebellion and abuse of power. His interrogation sessions were held inside the interrogation room at the CIO headquarters and were presided over by CIO deputy director Lee Jae-seung.

In a letter posted on his personal Facebook page at the time of his arrest, Yoon Suk Yeol continued to defend his declaration of martial law as a "management action" to send a warning to the main opposition Democratic Party about "abuse of legislative power".

In a handwritten letter he took a photo of and posted on Facebook, he stated: "Martial law is not a crime but an exercise of presidential authority to overcome a national crisis."

The South Korean president also said that his impeachment based on the story that martial law is equivalent to rebellion is "really absurd".
