According to AFP , on June 17, US President Joe Biden announced that Washington will not make special "arrangements" for Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“They have to meet the same standards,” Mr. Biden said. “So we’re not going to make that process easy.”
Previously, on May 2, German news agency DPA reported that Washington and Berlin were not ready to make any promises to Kiev about Ukraine's future NATO membership.
According to DPA , key members of the military alliance, the US and Germany, have recently made it clear to Ukraine that they do not want to make further commitments on the issue, beyond NATO's 2008 statement.
In a 2008 statement, NATO leaders said Ukraine and another former Soviet republic, Georgia, should join the alliance. However, NATO did not set a timetable for either country's accession.
During a visit to Kiev in April 2023, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated that Ukraine’s rightful place in NATO is in the alliance. He also predicted that over time, the alliance’s support would help make this a reality, but did not specify when Ukraine would become a NATO member.
However, a few days later, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that this was not the time to decide on Ukraine's position in NATO, stressing that the bloc's members should consider the issue "with a cool head and a warm heart", not the other way around.
On the same day, Reuters reported that the White House chief expressed his hope to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming months.
