Since February 2023, former President Carter has been cared for at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, spent 77 years. The former First Lady passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96.
Jimmy Carter was the first US President to live to the age of 100. Carter's term as US President lasted from January 20, 1977 to January 20, 1981.
Among the achievements of the Carter administration were the Panama Canal Treaty, which returned the canal to Panama in 1979; the Camp David Accords, a historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1978; the SALT II Treaty with the Soviet Union, which set limits and guidelines on nuclear weapons but never formally entered into force; and the establishment of full diplomatic relations with China.
In addition, Mr. Carter actively fought for human rights on a global scale and considered human rights a focal point of his government's foreign policy.
After leaving the White House, former President Carter was widely respected for his role as a mediator and peacemaker on the international stage. He traveled around the world to observe elections, promote peace talks, and set up relief projects.
In 2002, Mr. Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “his efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to promote democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
