According to Sputnik, the above statement was made by President Vladimir Putin in his speech at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on June 16.

"Of course, more funds are needed to strengthen defense and security, to purchase weapons. We must do this to protect the sovereignty of our country," the Russian President said.

Also at the Forum, the Russian President announced that from now until 2028, Russian shipyards are expected to build about 260 ships.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has introduced changes to the large-scale shipbuilding program. To implement it, we will mobilize funds from the National Welfare Fund,” Putin said, announcing that Russia will also continue building its icebreaker fleet.

This year's SPIEF was held at the Expoforum Exhibition and Convention Center, with the participation of more than 10,000 people from Russia and abroad, including heads of state and governments of countries, leaders of major companies, world-leading experts, representatives of the scientific community, media, etc.

The SPIEF 2023 Forum program is divided into 5 thematic blocks, including “The world economy in the era of global transformation”, “The Russian economy: From adaptation to growth”, “Building technological sovereignty”, “People's savings and quality of life are top priorities”, “Labor market: responding to new challenges”.

In his speech at the SPIEF Forum, President Putin mainly talked about Russia's development and its plans in various fields.
