President Putin traveled to the northern Russian city of Severodvinsk to view the two nuclear-powered submarines Krasnoyarsk and Imperator Alexander III at the Sevmash shipyard and observed a flag-raising ceremony for the two new submarines, according to Reuters.
President Putin said both new nuclear-powered vessels would soon take up duty in the Pacific , stressing that they were part of two separate classes of submarines Russia was deploying.
"We will increase the combat readiness of the Russian Navy, our naval power in the Arctic, the Far East, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Caspian Sea, the most strategically important areas of the world's oceans," Putin said at the flag-raising ceremony for the two submarines.

The Krasnoyarsk is a Yasen-class multipurpose submarine equipped with long-range, high-precision missiles that President Putin said could attack targets at sea and on land.
Imperator Alexander III is a Borei-class submarine, equipped with 16 Bulava missiles and modern torpedoes. The Bulava missile is 12 meters long, has an estimated range of about 8,000 km and can carry up to 6 nuclear warheads.

Previously, the Russian Defense Ministry said the country's navy has three Borei-class nuclear-powered submarines in operation, one completing trials and three others under construction.

President Putin has urged Russia to maintain its nuclear deterrent to counter what he calls a growing security threat, as relations between Moscow and the West have hit a new low after Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, according to Reuters.
