US President Donald Trump said on May 16 that within the next 2-3 weeks, his administration will notify many trading partners around the world about the new tax rates they must pay if they want to continue doing business in the US market.

Speaking at the end of a four-day trip to the Gulf, President Trump hinted that Washington could soon announce new tariffs that would be calculated on a country-by-country basis. Despite having signed trade deals with Britain and China, Trump said there were about 150 other countries that wanted to negotiate with the US.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick are preparing to send letters to several countries, “telling them clearly — in a very fair way — how much they will have to pay to do business in the United States.” However, Mr. Trump did not specify which countries would receive the letters or disclose details of the tariffs.

The move appears to signal a strong return to President Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs, which would impose a 10% base tariff on nearly all countries and higher additional tariffs on about 60 major trading partners that have a trade surplus with the US.

In early April, President Trump decided to postpone the imposition of tariffs for 90 days to give negotiations a chance. Mr. Trump affirmed that this deadline will not be extended, meaning that from the beginning of July, the new tariffs will take effect if no agreement is reached.

During the pause, the US is particularly focused on reaching agreements with about 20 key trading partners such as India, Japan and South Korea. However, these negotiations are racing against time./.
