The electric Toyota Urban Cruiser EV was officially introduced at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2025. This is Toyota's new compact electric SUV, which was first launched in December 2024. The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is essentially the twin brother of the Suzuki eVitara, an electric SUV that is planned for sale in Southeast Asia. It will compete with rivals in the compact electric SUV segment such as the Peugeot e-3008 and Hyundai Kona EV.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV has dimensions of length x width x height of 4,285 x 1,800 x 1,640 mm and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Thus, the car is smaller than its senior Toyota bZ4X but larger than the Yaris Cross. In terms of design, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV has a "hammerhead shark" style front end similar to the new generation Camry, with plastic details on the wheel arches and lower body creating a strong, off-road-oriented style. The car is equipped with 18-19 inch rims with aerodynamic cladding and a turning radius of 5.2 meters thanks to its compact body. Meanwhile, the wheelbase is 140 mm longer than the Toyota Yaris Cross, helping to create more spacious interior space. The rear seats can slide up, down and fold in a 40:20:40 ratio, allowing for expanded luggage compartment or increased legroom in the rear seats. Toyota says the interior space of this electric car is as wide as D-class SUVs.
The interior is equipped with a 12-color ambient lighting system, 360-degree camera, 10.1-inch central touch screen and 10.25-inch digital dashboard. The car supports smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Because it shares the same chassis platform with the Suzuki eVitara, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV also uses the same powertrain. Specifically, the car has a front-wheel drive FWD version with an electric motor with a maximum capacity of 144 horsepower and a maximum torque of 189 Nm. This electric motor is combined with a 49 kWh battery. Next is the FWD version with a strong electric motor of 174 horsepower/189 Nm and a 61 kWh battery. In addition, the car also has an AWD version with two electric motors, for a total capacity of 184 horsepower and a maximum torque of 300 Nm. Of which, the motor located on the rear axle has a maximum capacity of 65 horsepower, with a 61 kWh battery. According to the Indonesian news site Detik Oto, the FWD version using a 61 kWh battery can travel up to 400 km.
The corresponding figure for the standard version with a 48 kWh battery is about 300 km. Meanwhile, the AWD version with a 61 kWh battery has a range of about 350 km. The car can be fast-charged DC with a maximum capacity of up to 150 kW. It is not clear whether Toyota will introduce this electric SUV model in other Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam after Indonesia.
