Ho Chi Minh City spends 8,555 billion VND to renovate and build infrastructure of Van Thanh canal

Ho Chi Minh City People's Council decided to spend 8,555 billion VND, of which more than 6,812 billion VND is for site clearance costs to invest in the project of dredging, improving the environment, and building infrastructure of Van Thanh canal.

On the morning of June 28, the twenty-third session (special session), the 10th term People's Council of Ho Chi Minh City approved the Decision on investment policy for the Project of Dredging, improving the environment, and building infrastructure of Van Thanh canal, Thanh My Tay Ward.

The project is assigned to the Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board as the investor.

The total investment is 8,555.5 billion VND. Of which, more than 6,812 billion VND is for compensation, support, resettlement and project site clearance; the rest is for construction, project management, construction investment consulting... from the City budget.

The total length of the constructed canal (calculated according to the centerline of the main canal) from the alley of Vo Oanh Street to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal is 2,240 m long. Of which, the main canal from the alley of Duong D3 Street (Vo Oanh Street) to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal is 1,965 m long; Branch 1 canal is 275 m long.

The investment objective of the project is to beautify the urban area and improve the environment. Prevent encroachment on canal banks, causing water resource degradation, improve the environment and landscape of residential areas along both sides of the canal.

At the same time, enhance the capacity of water storage, drainage, and flood prevention for residential areas and public works in the basin. Combine the canal bank protection corridor with the construction of traffic routes along Van Thanh canal, synchronously connecting road traffic infrastructure and drainage systems, technical infrastructure along the route.

The canal-side road improves regional traffic capacity, improves traffic safety, serves people's travel needs to promote economic and social development and improve the spiritual life of people in the project area.

Project implementation period from 2025 to 2030.

In which, from now until 2026, we will prepare a Feasibility Study Report, organize local adjustments to the detailed planning project, organize compensation for site clearance. Organize construction surveys and design construction drawings.

Organize the selection of consulting contractors for survey, construction drawing design - estimate; topographic survey, construction drawing design - estimate; appraisal of construction drawing design - estimate; approval of construction drawing design - estimate from August 2026. Organize the selection of consulting and supervision contractors; construction from September 2026 to November 2026.

By the 2027 - 2029 period, the project will be under construction.

Van Thanh Canal is one of two major branches of the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal Basin (along with Xuyen Tam Canal). However, the current situation of encroachment, sedimentation and serious pollution of the canal over the past many years has greatly affected the drainage capacity and environmental landscape.

When the project of dredging, improving the environment, and building infrastructure for Van Thanh canal is implemented, polluted lakes, canals, and ditches will be renovated, eliminating the place where pathogens gather. In addition, investing in building a drainage system along the route to collect wastewater to the city's centralized wastewater treatment plant will help solve the problem of water quality and environment for Van Thanh canal in particular and the entire project area in general.

The new traffic route will connect with many traffic routes in the area such as Dien Bien Phu, Ngo Tat To, Nguyen Huu Canh, Vo Oanh, thereby increasing the development capacity, connecting road traffic, creating an important traffic network in the ward. The project will contribute to significantly improving traffic infrastructure and reducing traffic congestion in the ward.
