On May 14, Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City announced that doctors from the hospital's Department of Digestive Surgery had successfully performed a complex surgery, removing a giant 8kg tumor that was displacing and weakening the internal organs of a 47-year-old man.

Previously, Mr. NVT (47 years old, living in Long An province) felt abdominal tension and pain at night after long hours of driving a truck.

At first, he thought that the nature of his job as a driver and his love of drinking beer made his stomach grow bigger and bigger, causing him to feel heavy. However, recently, Mr. T's stomach became hard and protruded forward and to the sides, so he went to the local hospital for a check-up.

Local ultrasound results showed that the man had a tumor that occupied most of his abdomen, so he was transferred to Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to find a treatment plan.

Doctor Nguyen Phuc Minh, Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, said that the results of the abdominal MRI showed a tumor in the patient's abdomen with a diameter of up to 40cm, a structure similar to fatty tissue, occupying almost the entire abdomen and surrounding the right kidney.

More seriously, the tumor adheres to and compresses large blood vessels such as the artery, abdominal vena cava and neighboring blood vessels, causing impaired kidney function.

Doctors held a hospital-wide consultation to come up with the best surgical plan. Binh Dan Hospital mobilized doctors from the departments of General Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Urology, and Anesthesia and Resuscitation to coordinate the operation.

Doctors removed the retroperitoneal adhesion tumor, while preserving the right kidney, and separated the blood vessels to reduce damage and avoid blood loss. Anesthesia and resuscitation were also carefully calculated to ensure patient safety.

After more than 5 hours of surgery, the surgery was successful. Two days after the surgery, the patient was able to eat and drink as before and start moving.

According to Dr. Nguyen Phuc Minh, liposarcoma is a rare malignant disease. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is most common in the age group of 60 to 70. Liposarcoma can develop in many places in the body, most commonly in the limbs and retroperitoneum.

Previously, Binh Dan Hospital had also received cases of lipomas and retroperitoneal tumors that silently grew in the patient's abdomen; in particular, there was a 27-year-old female patient, 15 weeks pregnant, who also discovered a large tumor with a diameter of about 40cm directly pressing on the uterus, endangering the fetus.

The patient then underwent surgery to remove a tumor weighing more than 5kg. Pathology results showed that it was a fatty tumor. Thanks to timely surgery, the patient's pregnancy progressed well and she gave birth naturally.

Doctor Minh recommends that people should have regular health check-ups at least once a year to detect abnormalities early and avoid complicated complications./.
