Equip yourself with safety skills when crossing flooded roads

During the rainy season, many roads in the province are partially flooded, causing significant impacts on people's daily life and travel, especially in markets and low-lying residential areas in urban areas. Therefore, the fear of traffic safety when driving through flooded roads is always present during the rainy season. People need to equip themselves with some necessary skills to drive safely through these areas.

Rain is flood

Since early June 2025, continuous heavy rains in Bien Hoa city have caused many roads to be flooded, affecting people's travel and daily life.

During the rain that lasted for more than an hour at noon on June 7, some sections of National Highway 1 through the wards of Tan Hiep, Long Binh and Tan Bien were flooded, mainly in the motorbike lanes and sidewalks. The roads of Dong Khoi, Nguyen Ai Quoc, etc. were also in a similar situation, although the flooding was not too deep (about 20cm), it made it difficult for vehicles to move, forcing them to slow down.

Localized flooding also occurred on the evening of June 1, on many roads in Trang Dai ward - a densely populated area of Bien Hoa city. Heavy rain lasting about 30 minutes caused water to rise from
20-30cm on the following routes: Nguyen Khuyen, Tran Van Xa, Nguyen Phuc Chu... Due to the lack of drainage system in some sections, the water drained slowly, hindering people's traffic. At the same time, on National Highway 51 (near the intersection of the specialized road to Tan Cang Quarry Cluster, Phuoc Tan Ward), strong winds blew the corrugated iron roof of a household onto the road. People quickly handled the situation so as not to affect traffic.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, a safe driving skills trainer at Honda Vietnam , said that to ensure safety when traveling during the rainy season, priority should be given to using tires with deep grooves and large spikes to help increase grip and limit slipping. For motorbikes, tires should be checked regularly and replaced if worn or aged.

In Nhon Trach district, heavy rain on the afternoon of May 22 caused many roads and residential areas to be deeply flooded, making it difficult for vehicles to travel. Recorded at around 4 p.m. the same day, heavy flooding appeared at the intersection of Tran Phu - Ly Thai To (Phuoc Thien commune) and on Hung Vuong street, through Hiep Phuoc town, Long Tho commune. The most serious was the Lo Ren bridge area (Hamlet 2, Long Tho commune), where the water level rose from 40-50cm, causing many vehicles, especially motorbikes, to stall in the middle of the road. In addition, some boarding houses located in low-lying areas were also flooded, affecting the lives of people.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a resident living near Trang Dai market, said that every time there is heavy rain, the road near her house is often deeply flooded, making it very difficult to travel by motorbike.

“Every time it rains heavily, the roads are flooded like rivers, and motorbikes stall when they pass through. I have to walk through the water, which is very difficult. Cars moving fast also create big waves, splashing water on people and motorbikes, making pushing the motorbike even more difficult. One day, when I was taking my child to school, I had to carry him and wade through the water to push the motorbike through because I was afraid he would fall,” said Ms. Lan.

One of the reasons why flooding is getting worse in some urban areas is littering. Garbage, especially plastic bags and bottles, flows down the drains, blocking the flow and reducing the drainage capacity of the system.

“Many people lack awareness, throwing garbage on the street and down the drain. Just one rain and the garbage overflows, blocking many drains, and the water cannot drain away fast enough,” said Mr. Le Van Tuan (living in Trang Dai ward).

Prepare some necessary skills

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, a safe driving instructor at Honda Vietnam, when driving through flooded roads, drivers need to stay calm and carefully observe the depth of the flooded area before moving. Do not go too fast because it will create large waves, easily causing water to flood into the engine of the vehicle. If forced to move, keep a steady throttle, avoid sudden braking or sudden acceleration to limit the situation of the engine stalling in the middle of the road. In addition, you should follow the wheel tracks of the vehicle in front to limit the unexpected depth of the water.

Along with that, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles is essential, especially when it rains and visibility is limited. People should avoid driving too close to trucks or cars, because large waves from these vehicles can cause loss of balance or water to enter the engine of their vehicle. In case the vehicle stalls in the middle of a flooded road, absolutely do not try to restart it immediately, but should walk to a dry place to check. Because this not only damages the engine but is also dangerous for the driver. The correct way to handle this is to move the vehicle to a dry place, remove the spark plug to check and dry it before restarting.

The Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security recommends not to drive through flooded areas, especially when the water is deep or there is a strong current. Instead, priority should be given to finding another route or waiting until the water recedes. If driving through flooded areas, drivers should note: assess the depth and current before going through; do not attempt to cross if the water is deep or the current is strong; if the vehicle stalls, find a way to leave the vehicle, move to a safe place and notify the authorities.
