Sharp, emotional drawings once again recreate the heroic historical story of the Vietnamese people at the exhibition “Vietnam, Victory!” which opened on April 21 at Galería Tomy in the capital city of La Habana, Cuba.

The event, organized by the newspaper Juventud Rebelde (Youth Rebellion), is not only a gift to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Cuba diplomatic relations, but also an occasion to honor the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).

In the historic days of April 1975, when the news of victory from South Vietnam reached Cuba, the entire Caribbean island felt proud as if it were living in that joy. The American planes that were shot down and each liberated land became an endless source of inspiration for Cuban artists.

And in that flow, Juventud Rebelde has become a special bridge, bringing the image of heroic Vietnam closer to the hearts of the Cuban people through profound caricatures.

Highlighted in this exhibition is a series of works by the late artist Manuel Hernández Valdés - who was recently posthumously awarded the 2024 National Fine Arts Award.

With his talented pen and passionate heart, he vividly portrayed each stage of the Vietnamese people's resistance, especially the historic moment of April 30, 1975.

The paintings are not simply historical documents, but also contain the sincere feelings of an artist - a Cuban friend for Vietnam.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to look back at the special relationship between the two peoples, which was nurtured during the most difficult days. As the late leader Fidel Castro said: “For Vietnam, Cuba is willing to give its blood” - that spirit still flows in the hearts of every citizen of the two countries.

Today, as the young generations of Vietnam and Cuba look back on the glorious pages of history, the exhibition “Vietnam, Victory!” serves as a profound reminder of the strong solidarity that transcends all geographical distances and the test of time.

In the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Year 2025, the old drawings once again affirm: although half a world away, the two peoples are forever brothers./.
