Prospects for developing professional, humane and modern ASEAN journalism

The workshop "Practices, experiences and solutions for managing digital press offices in the ASEAN region" organized by the Vietnam Journalists Association on December 7, in Hanoi with the participation of 07 international delegations from the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists, including: Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore; press management agencies, press agencies, journalism training institutions in Vietnam was a great success, achieving the set goals.

In his concluding remarks at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi - Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association said that the workshop received more than 40 presentations from delegates from 8 ASEAN countries. With two sessions, theoretical, practical and experience issues in building and managing digital newsrooms were raised, discussed and analyzed, the workshop listened to, exchanged and interacted with international delegates from 7 ASEAN countries.

"These are valuable experiences and good suggestions for press agencies in ASEAN countries in general and Vietnam in particular to research, learn, and choose digital newsroom models and digital newsroom management methods that are suitable to the current situation, conditions, and resources of each type of newsroom and each press agency in each country," said comrade Nguyen Duc Loi.

According to comrade Nguyen Duc Loi, the digital newsroom models of key multimedia press agencies in Vietnam such as Vietnam News Agency, Nhan Dan Newspaper, Vietnam Television, People's Army Newspaper, and some local press agencies in Vietnam such as Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Kinh te do thi Newspaper, and Ho Chi Minh City Television have achieved certain achievements in digital transformation of the press, and have shared practical experiences, issues, and development solutions.

The seminar "Issues and solutions to optimize the management of digital press offices in ASEAN countries" is an open forum on many aspects: from communication science , content management, economic management, finance, data management, digital assets to technology application and digital tools, digital press product marketing issues...

The workshop received enthusiastic response from international delegates.

Comrade Nguyen Duc Loi emphasized that countries around the world are facing countless opportunities and challenges as digital transformation has reshaped all activities of social life; directly affecting daily life and working habits. This inevitable trend represents a huge breakthrough in socio-economic and human development.

In that context, the press and media cannot stand aside; digital transformation of the press and media is a matter of survival, essential for the development of press agencies, media organizations and journalists.

However, according to the Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the biggest challenge of digital transformation of the press in the region is the issue of resources. Press agencies around the world have caught up relatively early, but for ASEAN countries, some agencies and units still face many difficulties.

With two serious discussion sessions, the Workshop listened to many practical experiences from major press agencies in the region.

A well-built and well-managed digital newsroom will be a condition to take advantage of opportunities, overcome challenges and problems that ASEAN press has to face such as: unity of perception, strategy and clear identification of goals, methods, conditions, digital transformation roadmap, appropriate digital newsroom model, principles, content management processes, data management, digital public management and development, distribution on platforms, digital press copyright issues, shortage and lack of synchronization in human resources, technical platforms, technology and financial conditions and financial management.

Comrade Nguyen Duc Loi mentioned that the issue of financial resources is also a huge challenge, as digital transformation requires funding and finance, but not all press agencies in ASEAN can meet that condition.

In particular, in the current context when the press faces "fierce" competition from other forms of information, especially social networks, press agencies are facing more difficulties in finding sources of revenue to reinvest in multi-device technology platforms and training for journalists. At the same time, support from the Government and the State for press agencies is still uneven in countries in the region.

The discussion was lively with many optimal solutions proposed.

Comrade Nguyen Duc Loi commented that the organization of the Workshop "Digital Press Management: Theory, Practice, Experience in the ASEAN Region" has helped press agencies and journalists in ASEAN better understand and participate more deeply in digital transformation, contributing to creating a stronger ASEAN press, updating new ways of journalism, promoting the spread of press information in the region more strongly and better.

Thereby, contributing to mutual understanding between the public and people of ASEAN with the economic, cultural and social situation of each country; enhancing friendship and cooperation between countries in the region.

"The opinions and spirit of interaction, solidarity, and consensus on digital transformation awareness of the delegates showed the prospects of the ASEAN press bloc, solidarity, and the development of professional, humane, and modern national and regional journalism.
