According to SciTechDaily , people who have suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, often report lasting fatigue, up to a year later.
Fatigue from stroke often lasts a long time.
"People with TIA may have symptoms such as facial drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech. These symptoms usually resolve within a day," said study author Dr. Boris Modrau, of Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark.
“However, many people experience long-term problems such as reduced quality of life, difficulty thinking, depression, anxiety and fatigue.
For some people, fatigue is a common symptom that lasts up to a year after a transient ischemic attack."
The study, published in Neurology , the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, doesn't prove that mild strokes directly cause fatigue, but it does show a strong link between the two.
Researchers followed 354 people, average age 70, who had suffered a mild stroke. Each person was followed for a year to assess their recovery.
Sixty-one percent reported fatigue two weeks after their mild stroke, and 54% remained fatigued at all three follow-up check points of three, six, and twelve months.
Fatigue is linked to anxiety and depression.
Researchers found that a history of anxiety or depression was twice as likely to be present in people who reported chronic fatigue.
“Long-term fatigue was common in the study population. If someone felt tired within two weeks of being discharged from the hospital, they were more likely to continue to feel tired a year later,” says Dr. Modrau.
“The results of the study could help better understand who is at risk of developing this condition in the long term and needs additional care,” he explained.
One limitation of the study is that although participants were asked to complete the questionnaire themselves, it is possible that some had relatives or caregivers help them. This could have influenced their responses, including those related to fatigue levels.
