In 2015, the national high school exam was organized with two types of exam clusters: exam clusters chaired by universities for university admission results, and exam clusters chaired by localities for high school graduation purposes. By 2017, only 63 exam clusters were organized in provinces and cities chaired by the Departmentof Education and Training.

In 2020, the national high school graduation exam was changed to the high school graduation exam. The results of this exam are used for both graduation and university admission, and will last until the 2025 exam.

The methods and purposes, the exam questions are different, the exam results also fluctuate from year to year. Calculating the average score of each subject, 2024 is the exam with the highest average score.

To this day, candidates who took the 2018 national high school exam still talk about the difficulty of that year's exam. 2018 was also the year when the average scores of all subjects dropped sharply compared to the previous year and was also the year with the lowest average score in the past decade.

In the 2016 National High School Exam, candidates will take three compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language and one optional subject. Math, literature, history, and geography will be tested in essay format. Physics, chemistry, and biology will be tested in multiple-choice format. Foreign language will be tested in both written and multiple-choice format.

In the 2017 exam, candidates will take three compulsory subjects: math, literature, foreign language and one of two optional subjects: natural science or social science. Except for the literature subject, which is an essay test, the remaining subjects will be multiple-choice tests.

Except for 2018 with a high level of difficulty, since the introduction of multiple choice tests, the average score has been steadily increasing. In particular, history and English have improved significantly.

If 2018 was a year with difficult exams, 2021 had exams that were considered easy for candidates. It was also a year with a rain of 10s. Rarely in many years, all subjects had 10s, including literature. That is also the reason for the paradox of 30 points still failing the first university choice in 2021.

In 10 years, 2021 was the year with a record number of exams scoring 10 points, with more than 24,000 exams scoring 10 points. In the following years, the 10 points decreased sharply but were still much higher than before 2020. Civics was the subject with the most 10 points, literature rarely scored 10 points. 2016 was the year with the lowest 10 points.

In 2021 alone, with more than 24,000 10-point exams, civics dominated with nearly 19,000 10-point exams. English ranked second with the number of exams achieving perfect scores. Literature in 2021 also had 3 10-point exams.

Since becoming a high school graduation exam subject for the first time in 2017, civics has always been the subject with the highest average score, with the most 10s. The score distribution of this subject is always skewed to the right at 8-9 points. In 2021 alone, the score that most candidates achieved was 9.5 points.

Another notable point is that from the 2020 high school graduation exam, the number of 10-point exams has increased sharply compared to previous years. Along with that, the number of failing exams has also decreased sharply since this year. In 10 years, the number of failing exams has decreased 63 times.

In 2015, there were 37,000 failed exams. This number dropped sharply the following year. By 2017, there were only more than 6,800 failed exams. However, in the following years, the number of failed exams increased.

By 2020, the number of failing exams had dropped sharply and this trend is expected to continue through the 2024 exam.

The 2025 high school graduation exam has many opinions about the difficulty of the exam, many opinions say that there will not be many 10 points in math and English. The level of differentiation in the exam subjects has a large difference, causing many candidates applying for the math - physics - English, math - literature - English combination to express concern if the university does not divide the quota according to the combination but considers the combinations together.

The 2025 high school graduation exam scores will be announced at 8:00 a.m. on July 16.
