Growing specialty trees with large flower buds and finding ways to produce delicious fruit out of season, a Can Tho farmer earns 500-600 million/year

With a total area of 15,000m2, planted about 70 Ri 6 durian trees, of which 10,000m2 are bearing fruit, aged from 7-12 years. Every year, Mr. Thoan, Cai Rang district ( Can Tho city) harvests about 10-15 tons of durian, with durian selling price from 120,000-150,000 VND/kg depending on the time, after deducting all expenses, he earns a profit of about 500-600 million VND/year.

Located in Phu My area, Thuong Thanh ward, Cai Rang district (Can Tho city), for many years, Mr. Nguyen Phi Thoan's durian garden has always been crowded with visitors coming to visit, learn and buy.

The attraction of this durian garden lies not only in the beauty of the garden but also in the unique way the garden owner grows and cares for it so that every year he can "win" with off-season durian.

The day I visited, Mr. Thoan’s durian garden was in full bloom and had begun the pollination process. What struck me was not only the lush, green foliage of the durian trees, but also the durian trees planted on mounds of soil much higher than the usual durian gardens. Mr. Thoan said that each mound was 1.5m above the ground and had a diameter of about 10m.

Explaining to me about this unusual planting method, Mr. Thoan confided: “I have been to many places and realized that if planted in low mounds, the trees are easily flooded, making it difficult to adjust to produce off-season fruit, especially during the rainy and stormy season, so I came up with the idea of planting on high mounds. Every year when the tree grows, I continue to add more to the mounds and when the tree grows about 2m, I start cutting the tops so that the tree can spread its branches and create a canopy. Trees with controlled height will be easier to care for, monitor for fungal diseases, produce fruit, harvest and also avoid falling over.”

In addition to mounding and cutting the tops, Mr. Thoan's durian planting density is also very sparse, only 10 trees/1,000m2 (the usual density is 20-25 trees/1,000m2).

Planting trees sparsely will help durian trees have more space to grow, have a beautiful round canopy, facilitate photosynthesis, and have fewer pests and diseases. In fact, with his creative planting method, Thoan's durian garden's productivity is always one and a half times higher and the tree's lifespan is always higher than normal planting.

The Ri6 durian garden of Mr. Thoan, a durian farmer in Thuong Thanh ward, Cai Rang district (Can Tho city) is in bloom.

Mr. Thoan said that his durian garden only specializes in off-season planting. Although getting durian trees to bear fruit “at will” has a good selling price, it requires high technique.

Normally, Mr. Thoan starts to process off-season flowering from the 15th day of the 7th lunar month of the previous year and harvests by the 15th day of the 2nd lunar month of the following year. The time from pollination to harvest is about 90 days. Thus, each crop has 6 months to bear fruit, 2 weeks to harvest and then the time to care for and nurture the plants.

According to Mr. Thoan, before he got involved with durian trees, he used to grow tangerines, oranges, rambutans, and when he saw that durian trees brought high economic value, he started to learn about them and has been attached to them ever since.

Initially, as one of the pioneers in growing durian in Thuong Thanh ward, he encountered many difficulties. After many failures and experiences, he gradually got used to and understood the characteristics of this tree variety and made appropriate adjustments to achieve the current success.

With a total area of 15,000m2, planted with about 70 Ri 6 durian trees, of which 10,000m2 are bearing fruit, aged from 7-12 years. Every year, Mr. Thoan harvests about 10-15 tons of durian, with durian selling price from 120,000-150,000 VND/kg depending on the time, after deducting all expenses, he earns a profit of about 500-600 million VND/year.

Mr. Thoan shared: “Durian has very strange growth characteristics, it can be said that it is “not difficult but not easy”. Difficult is when we do not understand it, so we do not have the right way to handle it when the tree has problems with pests, fungi and leads to failure. Easy is when we understand, know what they need in each stage and have the right solutions”.

According to Mr. Thoan, for durian gardens that start bearing fruit from the first to third year, handling the off-season is quite easy. But in the following years, as the trees get older, it becomes more difficult to produce fruit. Therefore, growing off-season durian requires great passion and dedication.

“Growing durian cannot be done according to a “standard protocol” or process, but each year will have a different formula. Trees of different ages will produce different fruits. Not to mention that growing durian depends greatly on weather factors, accounting for about 60% and the remaining 40% is technical factors,” Mr. Thoan emphasized.

As one of the pioneer households growing durian in Thuong Thanh ward, Mr. Thoan could not avoid failures and stumbles. However, through the process of research, learning and summarizing experiences, he has succeeded with durian crops with good seasons and good prices.

When he got the results, Mr. Thoan started to encourage his family members and neighboring gardeners to boldly destroy ineffective trees and switch to growing durian. He also actively shared his experiences and provided technical guidance so that everyone could succeed, improve their income and become rich legitimately.

According to Mr. Thoan, with the economic efficiency brought, he has expanded the durian growing area by 5,000m2. At the same time, he has applied science and technology to the production process such as applying sprinkler irrigation technology, using organic fertilizers to make the trees more durable and less impact on the environment.

Along with that, to meet the current requirements of clean production and green consumption, for many years now, Mr. Thoan's durian has been grown according to VietGAP standards and has been certified.

It can be said that Mr. Thoan is a model of a hard-working, diligent farmer who constantly learns and innovates to become rich on his homeland.
