In Tan Tien village, Quyet Tien commune, Mr. Ngu Chinh Hung's family has about 7,000m2 of cucumber growing area. Recently, although Ha Giang province has had long-term heavy rains, affecting the yield of cucumbers, the quality of the fruit is still guaranteed. It is estimated that this year, the yield of cucumbers will reach 40 tons/ha.
In addition to his family's melon area, Mr. Hung is currently cooperating with 40 other households in Tung Vai commune and 10 households in Quyet Tien commune to purchase cucumber products for farmers to bring to markets outside the province.
Mr. Hung shared: In the past 3 years, his family has converted the rice growing area to grow cucumbers and tomatoes; cultivating in the form of alternating crops. For farmers, growing melons in association with product consumption will help farmers feel secure in their cultivation without worrying about output.
The entire Quyet Tien commune currently has about 128 hectares of cucumbers being harvested, with 5-6 groups associated in product consumption. To ensure that the cucumbers meet the criteria of size and quality when brought to the customer market, the local cucumber consumption groups cooperate with reputable domestic agricultural companies, implementing a closed process from providing seeds, instructing people on land preparation, planting, care, harvesting and product consumption.
Mr. Trieu Van Hoa, a cucumber consumption association in Hanoi , informed: Our association has sent agricultural technicians from Hanoi to Quan Ba district to directly instruct the planting and care techniques for the associated households. The association has signed a contract to purchase all cucumber products of the households that have associated with us. By ensuring a price of about 5,000 VND/kg or more, the cucumber growers have a stable income.
According to the cucumber growers in Quyet Tien commune, the selling price of cucumbers in the garden will depend on the time, but on average it will cost from 8,000 VND - 10,000 VND/kg. According to the reporter's records, the price of cucumbers in the garden of the people is quite high, from 12,000 VND - 14,500 VND/kg. Every day, the whole Quyet Tien commune exports about 40 tons of cucumbers to the market, mainly consumed in the Hanoi market.
Informing reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Vice Chairman of Quyet Tien Commune People's Committee, said: Quyet Tien is one of the localities with the largest vegetable growing area in Quan Ba district, with a total area of over 3,000 hectares. Since 2019, people in the commune have established a melon growing association group with 9 groups attracting the participation of more than 80 households in 6 villages, including the Bac Ninh Regional Melon Company in production and product consumption.
According to preliminary calculations by growers, on average, each hectare of cucumber after deducting costs, seeds and care will bring in an income of 200-240 million VND. Many households in the locality have escaped poverty and become rich thanks to cucumbers. Typically, in 2023, Mr. Vang Thong Cao's household in Bo Lach village had an income of 600 million VND thanks to cucumber farming.
Currently, Quyet Tien commune is entering the main harvest and consumption season of melons, so the melon picking activities here are bustling. Farmers are excited because melons have good prices and stable output. This will be a condition for Quyet Tien commune as well as local people to be able to expand the model of growing cucumbers together, gradually creating jobs and increasing income for people.
