Trong Hoang: Not daring to dream of being selected for the national team, playing football because of passion

“When I was young, I only knew passion, I didn’t dare to dream of being on the national team, I didn’t dare to hope for a title. Now, I have left the national team, I no longer care about titles, I just want to live fully with my passion,” Nguyen Trong Hoang shared on his personal Facebook page after Ha Tinh Club’s 3-1 victory over Binh Duong on the evening of May 3.

The simple but emotional sharing of "veteran" Trong Hoang made fans feel nostalgic. While many teammates of the same generation have left the field or turned to coaching, he is still persistently fighting in the 19th V.League season of his career.

Nguyen Trong Hoang, born in 1989, is one of the players of the “golden generation” of Vietnamese football. He was nicknamed “Hoang Bo” by fans – a symbol of tenacity, perseverance and persistence. Trong Hoang can play in many positions such as central midfielder, winger or full-back.

He has been playing for the national team since 2009 and has spent more than a decade fighting at the top level. From the AFF Cup, Asian Cup to World Cup qualifiers, Trong Hoang has left his mark thanks to his consistent performance.

The 2018 AFF Cup championship under coach Park Hang-seo is the most meaningful reward for Trong Hoang's contributions. At the 2019 Asian Cup, he assisted Cong Phuong to equalize 1-1 and then defeated Jordan 4-2 in a penalty shootout, helping the Vietnamese team reach the quarterfinals of the tournament for the second time.

In early 2022, Trong Hoang said goodbye to the national team, ending a proud journey with 74 times "eating the national team's rice". This year, despite being 36 years old, he still maintains a strong physical condition.

Two years ago, Trong Hoang faced the risk of retiring due to a herniated disc. But instead of putting aside his football career, he decided to start over. The player born in 1989 left SLNA to join Ha Tinh, starting an inspiring journey of "revival".

Hoang's goal was more precious than gold, helping Hong Linh Ha Tinh defeat PVF-CAND in the relegation play-off match last season. That goal was the value of experience, it saved the Hong mountain team from staying in the V.League.

This season, Trong Hoang continues to be an irreplaceable pillar. He has played 17/21 matches for Ha Tinh Club. Of these, he started 16 matches and only had to leave the field 6 times.

In the 3-1 win over Binh Duong, Trong Hoang played the full 90 minutes and scored 1 goal. Trong Hoang's goal is a testament to his perseverance, experience and dedication to his career.
