On May 29, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Tuoi Tre Online asked spokesperson Pham Thu Hang to state Vietnam's stance on the gunfight between Cambodia and Thailand in the disputed border area between the two countries the day before.

Responding to this issue, Ms. Hang said that information about the incident had been reported by both Cambodia and Thailand.

"We believe that all disagreements will be resolved by the parties through dialogue and peaceful measures, in accordance with the agreement of the two countries, the spirit of ASEAN solidarity and international law," said a representative of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As Tuoi Tre Online reported earlier, on the morning of May 28, a gunfight broke out between Cambodian and Thai armed forces in the disputed area between Cambodia's Preah Vihear province and Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province.

The gunfight lasted about 10 minutes and one Cambodian soldier was killed. Both sides have now withdrawn and announced that they will use diplomacy to resolve the conflict.

The incident occurred as ASEAN leaders just concluded the bloc's summit in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

On the morning of May 29, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially spoke out about the clash between Cambodian and Thai soldiers.

He said he received information about the clashes while he was on a business trip to Japan and was attending several meetings. The Cambodian Prime Minister also revealed that there will be a meeting between the Cambodian and Thai military leaders tonight (May 29), and expressed hope for positive results in maintaining peace and good communication between the two sides.

Regarding the deployment of forces and weapons to the border, according to Mr. Hun Manet, Cambodia "needs to be prepared in case of an emergency". He stated that Cambodia respects international law but also has "the right to use all means to protect its territory, including the use of armed forces".

Finally, Mr. Hun Manet hopes that the Cambodian people "give their trust to the government and the military to find a solution to this problem".
