Macadamia trees not only bring high nutritional value but also contribute to preventing erosion, reducing emissions, and adapting to climate change. Currently, the country has 29 provinces growing macadamia, with a total area of about 20,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in the Northwest and Central Highlands. In particular, the Lam Dong border area has emerged as a bright spot, gradually affirming that macadamia is a crop that helps people increase their income, aiming for a sustainable livelihood.
However, macadamia production in the province still has many limitations, small-scale linkages, and lacks sustainability. Most growing areas have not paid attention to quality standards and food safety, and have not formed uniform raw material areas, causing difficulties in processing and consumption.
Faced with that reality, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center took the lead in implementing the Central Agricultural Extension project "Building a model of intensive macadamia cultivation according to VietGAP standards, linked with product consumption linkage in some Central Highlands provinces" with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment as the managing agency.

In Lam Dong, the model was implemented in Quang Truc commune, with a scale of 15 hectares, with 19 households participating. The project's goal is to develop over 70 hectares of intensive farming, with productivity increasing over 10% and economic efficiency over 10% compared to mass production.
Mr. Dieu D'ray's family in Bon Prang I, Quang Truc commune, has more than 2 hectares of hilly land. In 2010, from the national agricultural extension program, Mr. Dieu D'ray received support for seeds, fertilizers, and planted 1 hectare of macadamia. Mr. Dieu D'ray said: "From the agricultural extension program on macadamia trees, I have been growing them for 15 years, and now, I have been guided to grow them according to VietGAP. Thanks to the application of measures to improve the quality of the orchard, people have gradually increased their income, eliminated hunger, and reduced poverty."
Ms. Thi Nhen in Bu Prang II hamlet, Quang Truc commune also grows more than 1 hectare of macadamia. According to Ms. Thi Nhen, when participating in the program, the State organized training courses, transferred science and technology, and supported her with seeds and agricultural materials. With more than 1 hectare of macadamia, each year she harvests about 1.3 tons of fruit, the selling price ranges from 90,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, helping her earn a profit of about 100 million VND/year.

According to Mr. Pham Tan Minh - Project Manager, in 2025, the Agricultural Extension Center organized 2 training courses, 3 classes outside the model, with over 150 farmers participating. In particular, the class attracted many ethnic minority households to participate, opening up opportunities to receive new techniques in remote areas. The lecturers were highly specialized staff who guided the techniques of flowering, fruiting, pest management, harvesting, preservation, and product traceability according to VietGAP.
“The consumption linkage activities have been strongly implemented through seminars, production and consumption linkage groups according to VietGAP standards in growing areas. Notably, the linkage group has signed a purchasing contract with Long Viet Agricultural Service Cooperative, committing to purchasing all 15 hectares of the model, with an expected output of 30 tons, purchasing price according to the market and adding 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg depending on quality”, said Mr. Minh.
Along with the addition of quality seed sources, the purchasing and processing system is increasingly developing with 34 facilities and enterprises, with a capacity of about 8,500 tons of nuts/year. Lam Dong macadamia products are available in supermarkets and convenience stores domestically and exported to Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Australia... Many typical enterprises are operating such as: Viet Macadamia Company Limited, Mai Thao Macadamia (Di Linh), TBK Green Food, Huy Hieu (Tan Ha - Lam Ha), Viet Xanh Macadamia Company (Duc Trong)...
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong - Director of Lam Dong Agricultural Extension Center, the model of intensive macadamia cultivation following VietGAP standards in the Quang Truc border area not only helps farmers improve techniques and increase productivity but also creates an important foundation for the formation of concentrated, safe, and traceable raw material areas. "This is a prerequisite for participating in large supply chains," Mr. Chuong added.
Currently, the province's macadamia growing area is about 13,097 hectares, with an output of 12,508 tons and an average yield of 22.4 quintals/hectare. The whole province has 42/124 communes identified as key macadamia producing areas, of which 33 communes belong to Lam Dong (old) and 12 communes belong to Dak Nong (old). This is an important advantage to form a concentrated raw material area, creating favorable conditions to attract businesses to invest in deep processing.
