In recent days, container trucks carrying durian from our country’s growing regions have been lining up to head to China. This is the largest export market for durian, helping tens of thousands of farmers in our country earn billions after just one harvest.

At the durian gardens of Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company (HAGL) in Gia Lai, every day, there are continuous groups of traders coming to inquire about and buy this billion-dollar fruit. Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc - Chairman of the Board of Directors of HAGL - once said that the company will sell durian directly to Chinese partners, without going through intermediaries.

This year, HAGL’s durian output from just two gardens in Gia Lai has reached 800 tons. However, the company has not yet finalized the selling price with its purchasing partners.

China is still identified as a key export market for Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery products and is expected to achieve high growth. In addition to strong products such as vegetables, seafood, etc., businesses are focusing on increasing market share of products with great potential such as rubber, pepper, cassava, etc.

Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that by the end of May, our country's agricultural exports to the Chinese market reached 4.6 billion USD. Of which, the export turnover of many agricultural products continued to explode, accounting for a large proportion.

Specifically, in the first 5 months of this year, our country earned 1.71 billion USD from exporting fruits and vegetables to China, an increase of 32.6% over the same period last year. Accordingly, China is our country's largest fruit and vegetable export market, accounting for about 60% of the export turnover of this item.

Similarly, China is “buying” cassava and cassava products from Vietnam, accounting for 91.37% of the export turnover of this industry. By the end of May 2024, cassava and cassava product exports to the billion-people market reached 509 million USD, up 8.9% over the same period last year.

Exports of wood and wood products to China reached 887.8 million USD, up 51.2% over the same period in 2023. Among the top 5 main markets of the Vietnamese wood industry, China is the market with the highest growth rate.

This is also the second largest customer of Vietnamese seafood and cashew nuts. Seafood export turnover by the end of May 2024 reached 537.5 million USD, up 4.9% over the same period in 2023; cashew nuts reached 290 million USD, up sharply 46.3%.

In addition, coffee exports to this billion-people market also increased by 25.5% in volume and 53% in value over the same period last year.

Regarding pepper, China is expected to increase its purchases because its inventory is low, giving Vietnam a great opportunity to boost its export turnover to its neighbor. In fact, in May, our country's pepper exports to the Chinese market reached 3,137 tons, 4.8 times higher than the previous month and the highest level in the past 11 months.

In the first five months of this year, only rubber and rice export turnover recorded negative growth.

According to Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), up to now, many agricultural, forestry and aquatic products of Vietnam have been officially exported to China, helping the export value to this market grow well. Of these, there are 12 vegetable and fruit products; bird's nest, fish meal and some products serving the production and processing of animal feed; dairy products and various types of aquatic products.

Earlier this June, at the meeting between Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung and Mr. Trieu Tang Lien - Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Customs of China - leaders of the two sides agreed to promote cooperation in the field of agricultural trade and market opening in the coming time.

Specifically, soon complete procedures to sign a protocol on plant quarantine requirements for fresh coconuts and frozen durians exported from Vietnam to China.

Regarding passion fruit and chili, the two sides have carried out pilot exports and are accelerating the completion of procedures to be able to sign these two documents soon. In addition, they will coordinate to complete the protocol on exporting crocodiles, raw bird's nests, poultry and exploited aquatic products from Vietnam to China.

Recently, during a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Dalian, Liaoning province, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang said that China will further open its market to Vietnamese goods, especially high-quality agricultural, aquatic and fruit products.

The neighboring country also facilitates quarantine and customs clearance and is ready to work with Vietnam to promote the resolution of policy problems so that trade between the two countries can grow sustainably.

With a population of over 1.4 billion people and a growing middle class, China is a large market for many types of high-quality agricultural, forestry and fishery products. However, the market share of Vietnamese agricultural products here is still relatively small, accounting for less than 5% of the total import value of this group of products in China. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to increase the market share of high-quality agricultural, forestry and fishery products in this market.
