According to Dr. Tran Pham Chi, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Hue Central Hospital, currently, cases of hospitalization due to alcohol poisoning are in many specialties, the most serious are in the Emergency Department (mostly comatose patients).

People who drink a lot of alcohol often have severe pain in the epigastric region, even vomiting blood. When endoscopy is performed, the entire gastric mucosa is red like rose petals, and in severe cases, there may even be bleeding.

On the days before Tet, many cases of alcohol poisoning had to be hospitalized.

Alcohol drinkers suffer from neurotoxicity (photo TL).

There are still cases of liver damage leading to severe acute liver failure. The patient now shows signs of fatigue, jaundice, dark urine...

Upon admission to the hospital, examination revealed an enlarged liver, abdominal fluid, subcutaneous bleeding, and progressive jaundice. Tests showed elevated liver enzymes and severe blood clotting disorders. After treatment, most patients improved. However, a few did not recover and even died.

Doctor Tran Pham Chi said that alcohol affects many organs in the body, almost every organ is affected such as the nervous system, brain, liver, cardiovascular system, kidneys, etc. In the digestive specialty, the most prominent are hepatitis and cirrhosis.

There are also diseases such as gastritis, stomach ulcers, and esophageal tears caused by alcohol (acute poisoning). The most serious and long-term damage is hepatitis, liver failure, and cirrhosis caused by alcohol, creating a medical burden for patients, families, and society.

This expert advises that when taking Western medicine, one should not drink alcohol, because it limits the effectiveness of treatment and increases the side effects of the medicine.

For example, taking psychotropic drugs but drinking alcohol can cause the patient to fall into a coma or have no effect in treating mental disorders.

Patients with arthritis and polyarthritis who take painkillers and drink alcohol will increase the toxicity of the drug on the liver and stomach lining, leading to stomach ulcers and stomach bleeding. Taking Paracetamol without abstaining from alcohol will increase the toxicity of Paracetamol, leading to liver failure.

Mr. Tran Pham Chi advises that only those who drink alcohol and cannot control their words, actions, and gestures show that they have been poisoned for quite a while. Signs of alcohol poisoning can be noticed by those around them, but are difficult for the drinker to notice.

If you do not drink alcohol at all, it is very good for your health. Otherwise, we should drink in moderation. If you feel that your perception or behavior is not normal, stop drinking immediately. Another very important note is not to operate a vehicle after consuming alcohol.

According to Dr. Tran Pham Chi, the level of poisoning that requires hospitalization depends on the severity and the affected organ. If the poisoning affects the nervous system, the patient may even have an acute psychotic episode; drowsiness, agitation, coma or organ damage that is difficult to recover from after the acute poisoning episode... take the victim to the hospital.

People who drink alcohol and find that their body is not well should go to a medical facility immediately. Determining the level will be done through clinical examination and testing.

According to this person, in normal alcohol poisoning (without prior long-term alcohol abuse), our body's organs can recover on their own. In cases of acute poisoning on a background of weakened organs, some people will not recover or will recover partially. Some people will suffer irreversible damage.

With acute poisoning, treatment will support the function of the organs and maintain their activities in a stable state. At that time, the body will increase the excretion of alcohol, the amount of beer and wine out, the body will gradually recover over time.

The doctor's task is to help stabilize the patient as much as possible, so that the signs of poisoning will gradually decrease. In cases of chronic poisoning, chronic alcoholism, this process is only partially effective.

People with alcohol poisoning are mostly affected by the nervous system, they will have arousal, change in temperament, gestures, and words that can harm themselves or those around them.

Some people vomit, have gastrointestinal bleeding, vomit blood, and are comatose. In all cases, we can take the patient to the hospital as soon as possible.

In case of emergency, contact the nearest medical facility and keep the patient in a safe state. For agitated, violent patients, keep them quiet. For comatose patients, we put them on their stomachs to avoid vomiting and avoid aspiration of vomited food into the lungs.

To prevent alcohol poisoning, doctors say that on normal days or holidays, if you drink, use as little as possible and always monitor your body.

To reduce the harmful effects of alcohol, there are some small tips that can be applied, such as eating a lot, eating a little starch, vegetables, meat, fish... These foods help prevent alcohol from being absorbed quickly through the digestive tract mucosa (which increases acute alcohol poisoning).

Drinking some juices and snacks can help reduce the alcohol concentration. Even singing and talking can help eliminate alcohol through the respiratory tract.
