Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry: Successfully researched and transferred 4 new grape varieties

BAC NINH - After successfully researching and transferring the Ha Den grape growing technique in 2018, the Center for Applied Research and Technology Transfer of Agriculture and Forestry (Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry) continued to research and successfully select and create 3 new grape varieties. This is an outstanding achievement in the unit's scientific research process.

Master Phung Duy Hieu, Director of the Center, said that in September 2016, within the framework of the 14th China - Southeast Asia Trade Fair held in Nanning City (China), the Vietnam - China Agricultural Science and Technology Corridor Cooperation Project was signed to supplement the crop variety structure for Vietnam's border provinces.

Implementing this project, in early 2017, the Center received 800 Ha Den grape roots from the Guangxi Agricultural Sciences Institute (China) and completed by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Ha and his colleagues. From the initial 800 Ha Den grape roots, through the research process and application of many technical solutions, Ha Den grapes have grown and developed well, adapted to Vietnam's climate conditions, can be harvested twice a year, with a yield of 16 tons/ha/year. The sweetness of Ha Den grapes grown at the Center ranges from 17-18%, higher than other grape varieties grown domestically, the selling price must be from 100-130 thousand VND/kg, and is popular with consumers. Up to now, the Center has supported the transfer of Ha Den grape growing techniques to 30 provinces and cities with an area of ​​about 360 hectares.

Following this success is the Peony grape variety. This variety was selected by Master Phung Duy Hieu and Master Tran Quang Dao from native genetic resources, achieving a sweetness of 20-22%, stable yield (about 14 tons/ha/year), and can be harvested after about 2 years of planting.

Next are two seedless grape varieties NDHĐ and NHV15 researched and developed by the group of authors Phung Duy Hieu, Tran Quang Dao, Pham Thu Hang, Le Quoc Hung and Pham Xuan Hoi. In which, the NDHĐ grape variety stands out with its glossy black skin, yielding 18 - 20 tons/ha, good drought resistance, suitable for midland areas and hot, dry climates. The NHV15 grape variety has a dark red skin, yielding 18 - 21 tons/ha, outstanding disease resistance, suitable for large-scale production.

The advantages of the two grape varieties above are high sweetness (18-22%) and seedless characteristics, meeting modern consumption trends. Currently, all four grape varieties above have been licensed for circulation nationwide by the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment).

The achievement of selecting and creating 4 grape varieties at Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry is a breakthrough in research, application and transfer of science and technology. This result contributes to supplementing and diversifying the crop structure, helping farmers have the opportunity to access many new crops with high productivity and quality.

Currently, the Center for Applied Research and Technology Transfer in Agriculture and Forestry continues to research a number of new plant varieties (grapes, drought-resistant peanuts, other short-term crops). Thereby, it continues to introduce and supply to the market many new plant varieties with high productivity and quality, adaptable to farming conditions and climate change in Vietnam.
