On October 1, 2004, Yersin University of Dalat was officially established under Decision No. 175/2004/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister , becoming the first non-public university training institution in the Central Highlands. The founders chose the name of Dr. Alexandre John Emile Yersin as the school's name to honor the French scientist whose name and career were closely associated with Indochina and Vietnam.

Doctor A. Yersin was the one who discovered and proposed to the Governor General of Indochina to build Da Lat City into a resort at the end of the 19th century. This was an important premise for the formation and development of Da Lat into a livable city as it is today. Doctor A. Yersin made many contributions in the fields of medicine, veterinary medicine, agronomy, ethnology, geography... to humanity and especially to Vietnam.
