Ninh Hiep No. 2 Primary School: Difficulties in teaching and learning after the floods.

Nearly a month after the historic floods in November, Ninh Hiep No. 2 Primary School (Ninh Hoa Ward) is still facing difficulties in teaching and learning, and organizing boarding for students. The school urgently needs timely support to stabilize its operations as soon as possible.

We had to use plastic tables and chairs temporarily.

The bell signaling the start of class rang, and students rushed into the classroom. However, instead of settling into their seats, many were fumbling around trying to find a place to put their bags and a stable spot to take notes. Ms. Phan Thi Bao Chau, a teacher at the school, said: "The recent floods damaged many of the students' desks and chairs. While waiting for new desks and chairs, teachers had to ask parents to bring desks and chairs from home to the classroom for temporary use. The desks and chairs brought by parents are mostly plastic, old, and not up to standard. We are very worried that the students have to sit in such an unsafe position, affecting their health and learning."

It is known that the recent floods caused severe flooding in the first-floor classrooms of the school. Immediately after the water receded, the school promptly cleaned up and rearranged the premises to resume teaching from November 27th. Approximately 270 sets of student desks and chairs were damaged and are currently temporarily stored in the warehouse. In addition, 20 sets of teacher desks and chairs, 8 sets of office desks and chairs, over 1,000 books in the library, and many teaching machines and equipment were damaged, with total losses estimated at approximately 1.5 billion VND. Mr. Nguyen Tan Ca - the school principal - said: “After the floods, the school received attention and support from various levels of government, departments, and benefactors in terms of books, learning materials, and scholarships for students... But the biggest difficulty now is the lack of desks and chairs. This not only hinders teaching activities but also affects the reassessment of the school's national standard status in 2026, as many already dilapidated facilities are now even more severely damaged.”

We hope to resume the daycare program soon.

The shortage of desks and chairs has also forced the temporary suspension of the school's after-school care program for over 600 students, causing significant inconvenience for parents in dropping off and picking up their children daily, especially those working regular office hours or shift workers. Furthermore, many students have to travel long distances to school. Mr. Pham Thang Loi, Head of the School's Parent Representative Committee, stated: "Having to drop off and pick up children at lunchtime disrupts the daily routines and work schedules of both parents and students. We hope the school will soon be equipped with new desks and chairs to ensure adequate learning conditions for our children and to restore the after-school care program."

Teacher Nguyen Tan Ca added: "To organize lunch for students, the school has contracted with a catering company. During the recent floods, the kitchen area was not affected, but due to damaged tables and chairs, the school temporarily suspended lunch services. Therefore, every day, parents have to arrange to pick up their children after morning classes (at 10:10 AM) and bring them back to school before 1:45 PM for afternoon classes. Some students have to wait until after 11 AM to be picked up because their parents are busy with work."

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Hai, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Ninh Hoa Ward People's Committee, said: "The recent floods caused severe damage to many schools in the locality, including Ninh Hiep No. 2 Primary School. Following the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the ward has compiled statistics, assessed the damage, and proposed support from the province. Immediately after the Provincial People's Committee issued a support decision on December 1st, the ward issued an order to construct emergency projects; including the purchase of equipment and supplies for teaching and learning in the schools. It is expected that from December 20th to 26th, the ward will complete the handover of all new desks and chairs to ensure suitable teaching and learning conditions for the schools."
