This allowed Huawei to bypass export restrictions imposed by the US government in 2019, which prevented it from buying components from TSMC. Now TSMC has discovered another company from Singapore that has been doing the same.
TSMC tries not to let Huawei 'overtake' it
TSMC has been forced to cut ties with Singapore-based PowerAIR, according to the South China Morning Post . An investigation into interactions between TSMC and a little-known chip designer in Singapore has found that PowerAIR may have violated US export controls, the report said. The investigation was launched by TSMC after it discovered that PowerAIR had accelerated chip shipments to Huawei to circumvent US sanctions.
TSMC affirms that it has no intention of helping Huawei circumvent the law
TSMC has repeatedly said it has no intention of helping Huawei and is committed to complying with US export control regulations. US export restrictions have caused Huawei to lose access to advanced technology from global chipmakers, forcing it to rely on China's SMIC - a company also under US sanctions. Huawei previously said it had not received any chips from TSMC since being sanctioned in 2020.
Last year, Sophgo and its parent company Bitmain said they had no ties to Huawei and called the suspicions from TSMC and the US unfounded. For their part, PowerAIR representatives did not comment on the matter.
