On September 22 (ie August 20, Giap Thin year), at the historical and cultural relics of Bao Loc Temple and Tran Temple in the historical and cultural relics of Tran Temple - Thap Pagoda, the People's Committee of Nam Dinh City (Nam Dinh Province) held an incense offering ceremony to commemorate the 724th anniversary of Saint Tran's death. This is an activity within the traditional festival of Tran Temple in 2024.
Chairman of Nam Dinh City People's Committee Nguyen Tien Dung said: The ceremony contributes to reviewing the heroic tradition of our ancestors,educating the tradition of patriotism against foreign invaders, demonstrating the nation's morality of remembering the source of water, and showing gratitude to the merits of our ancestors who built and defended the country.
For a long time, people have passed down the song "August is the death anniversary of Father (Duc Thanh Tran), March is the death anniversary of Mother (Thanh Mau Lieu Hanh)." The festival to commemorate "Father" (August of the lunar calendar every year) has penetrated deeply into the consciousness of every Vietnamese person. The worship of Duc Thanh Tran is a diverse and colorful treasure of Intangible Cultural Heritage, with many unique values and humanistic meanings.
After the incense offering ceremony to commemorate the souls of the Tran Kings and Saint Tran, many other activities took place such as: palanquin procession, sacrificial ceremony and festival, including traditional cultural and artistic activities (Cheo singing, Van singing, sword dancing) to review the glorious and heroic tradition of the Tran Dynasty and the contributions of the national hero Tran Hung Dao in the three resistance wars against the Yuan-Mongol.
During the festival, locals and visitors can also enjoy lion dances, dragon dances, martial arts performances, wrestling competitions, human chess competitions, cockfighting, water puppetry, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Binh, Head of the Management Board of the Tran Temple - Thap Pagoda Historical and Cultural Relic Site, said that in order for the Tran Temple Festival to take place solemnly and safely, the Organizing Committee has assigned specific tasks to each unit to ensure security, order, traffic safety, and fire prevention and fighting at the Relic Site.
At the same time, the Organizing Committee will develop a plan to propagate, prevent and control epidemics in crowded places, prepare enough necessary emergency medicine and forces on duty at Tran Temple and Thap Pagoda; ensure environmental hygiene and food safety for food vendors; and prevent homeless people from begging during the festival.
Tran Temple in Loc Vuong Ward, Nam Dinh City is a place to worship the Tran Kings and many mandarins who contributed to the Tran Dynasty. The temple consists of three main architectural works: Thien Truong Temple (Upper Temple), Co Trach Temple (Lower Temple) and Trung Hoa Temple. Every year, the traditional Tran Temple Festival is held here in the 8th lunar month and the New Year's Opening Seal Festival.
These are two major festivals in Nam Dinh, attracting a large number of people and visitors from all over to attend and offer incense to commemorate the merits of the Tran Kings and National Hero Tran Hung Dao.
