On the evening of June 18, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team had their opening match at the AVC Nations Cup 2025 , against New Zealand. The opponent of Quang Trong Nghia and his teammates is ranked 57th in the world (1 place below Vietnam), with players of impressive height, notably the middle blocker Andrew Salmon, who is over 2m tall.

Entering set 1, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team started the game confidently. Ngoc Thuan had powerful smashes, helping coach Tran Dinh Tien's team take a 10/5 lead. The New Zealand players then tried their best, narrowing the score to 15/18.

At the most important moment of the set, the Vietnamese players showed their efficiency in playing. Nguyen Van Quoc Duy was the one who brought the 25th point for Vietnam, winning 25/23 in the first set.

In the second set, the two teams played a tight game. Ngoc Thuan was still the main scorer for the Vietnamese volleyball team. After the two teams tied 10/10, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team took the lead and won 25/22 in this set.

In set 3, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team caused many difficulties for New Zealand before defeating their opponents 25/15, winning 3-0 overall.

With this result, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team won a ticket to the quarterfinals because New Zealand lost to Korea 0-3 (26/28, 13/25 and 22/25) in the opening match.

In the final match of the group stage (group D), coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team will meet Korea at 8:30 p.m. on June 19.
