Metro Line 1 officially opened, people get free train rides for 1 month

This morning (December 22), the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held a ceremony to officially announce the operation of metro line No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) at Ben Thanh central station, District 1.

After more than 10 years of implementation with a total investment of more than 43,700 billion VND, the operation of metro line No. 1 marks a historical milestone in the journey of developing urban transport in the City, attracting a lot of attention from the people.

The Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) – the investor – said that the official operation ceremony of metro line 1 will start from 7 to 10 am today. All delegates attending the event along with many people will become the first special guests of metro line 1 with a total route length of about 19km.

Metro Line 1 passes through 3 underground stations including Ben Thanh, City Theater, Ba Son and 11 elevated stations including Van Thanh, Tan Cang, Thao Dien, An Phu, Rach Chiec, Phuoc Long, Binh Thai, Thu Duc, High-Tech Park, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Suoi Tien Bus Station.

Travel time from Ben Thanh station to Suoi Tien bus station is 29 minutes if stopping at all 14 stations. The metro line operates from 5am to 10pm every day.

Ticket price for one station is 7,000 VND/trip; for the whole route is 20,000 VND/trip; daily ticket is 40,000 VND (valid for one day) with no limit on the number of trips; 3-day ticket is 90,000 VND; monthly ticket for general use is 300,000 VND but priority is 150,000 VND for students. In addition, the train is free for children under 6 years old, meritorious people, seniors over 60 years old and people with disabilities. In the first 30 days, passengers can experience free train travel.

To help people easily access the train, 150 electric buses connecting Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien Metro Station will be operated from December 22, with ticket prices ranging from 3,000 - 6,000 VND/trip. These are new bus routes opened by Ho Chi Minh City with 17 routes numbered from 153 to 169, operated by Phuong Trang Passenger Transport Joint Stock Company - Futa Buslines - the winning transport unit.

Under the MAUR 30-day free period (expected from December 22, 2024 to January 20, 2025), people can use EMV cards issued by Mastercard to travel by train. Vikki Digital Bank will issue 30,000 free VikkiGO anonymous cards to people who do not have a card to travel by train.
VikkiGo is a set of 3 prepaid cards, debit cards, and credit cards launched with the first Metro line of Ho Chi Minh City right in the shopping and spring festival season. VikkiGO card not only helps customers take the metro but also conveniently participate in public transportation such as buses, waterbuses, Buggy electric cars and other technology-based ride-hailing applications.
