USD exchange rate today April 22, 2025: Hits 3-year low

USD exchange rate today April 22, 2025: The USD continued to plummet and hit its lowest level in the past three years. This decline was largely due to harsh criticism that President Donald Trump aimed at Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the strength of the USD against six major currencies, fell 0.75 points to 98.48 points - the lowest level since March 2022.

Trump's tough talk and demands for immediate interest rate cuts are raising concerns about the Fed's independence, a factor considered the foundation of US monetary policy.

The US dollar has weakened sharply not only against the euro, which has now passed the $1.15 mark, but also against the Swiss franc, which has hit a 10-year low.

As for the Japanese yen, the greenback is also at a seven-month low. Data from the CFTC shows investors are betting heavily on the yen, with net long positions hitting a record high.

The situation became more tense when White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett revealed that the Trump administration was considering the possibility of firing Mr. Powell. A day earlier, Mr. Trump also declared that "firing Powell could not come soon enough", continuing to put political pressure on the Fed to adjust interest rate policy.

Trading on international markets was generally thin as many major markets in Europe, Australia and Hong Kong were closed for the Easter holiday. However, the US dollar's performance still attracted special attention.

Karl Schamotta, an expert at Corpay, warned that if the Fed is forced to pursue political goals instead of protecting price stability and employment, it could lose its ability to control inflation in emergencies.

Meanwhile, many other currencies have rallied. The British pound hit its highest level since September last year at $1.34. The Australian dollar hit a four-month high of $0.6430. The New Zealand dollar also broke through the $0.60 mark for the first time in more than five months.

China’s yuan also rose in both onshore and offshore markets, with the offshore rate hitting a one-week high of $7.2911, reflecting investor appetite to hedge against the dollar’s volatility.
