Ukrainian and US officials have held a third round of talks on finalizing a bilateral security agreement between the two countries.
A statement from the Office of the President of Ukraine late on April 29 said the two sides discussed the content of the draft security agreement and noted significant progress in working out the main provisions of the document.
The Ukrainian delegation to the talks was led by Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, the statement quoted the official as saying that the negotiations were accelerated by Washington's approval of a nearly $61 billion aid package for Kiev.
“I am confident that our leaders will be able to sign a bilateral security agreement in the near future,” Yermak added.
The official, known as the “right-hand man” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, also said that the security agreement they are discussing would confirm Washington’s military and security support for Kiev.
The agreement will also directly contribute to Ukraine's "victory" over Russia, and create a solid basis for long-term cooperation between Ukraine and the United States to strengthen the Eastern European country's defense capabilities, Mr. Yermak added.
Ukraine has signed bilateral security treaties with nine other countries: the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Finland, France, Italy, Canada and the Netherlands. All are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The agreements come as the G7 announced at the NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius last July that it was holding talks with Kiev to formalize its “long-term support” for Ukraine through “bilateral security commitments and agreements . ”
