The Armed Forces of Ukraine have launched a missile attack on an airport near Berdyansk, Zaporozhye region, where Russian helicopters are based.
Public video footage shows a large fire at the airport and damage to the Russian plane. Sources close to the Russian military also confirmed significant damage to military equipment and that there were also casualties.
According to preliminary reports obtained by SF , at least six missiles were fired, three of which were shot down by Russian air defenses. The attack resulted in a missile strike on an ammunition depot and various degrees of damage to several helicopters. Russian military officials have not yet commented on the attack. In the coming hours, Ukrainian media may share satellite images confirming the damage.
According to local sources, fierce fire was seen at the airport for several hours and loud explosions were heard at the time of the attack.
SF news site reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces used MGM-140B ATACMS Block 1A (M39A1) ballistic missiles supplied by the US. Parts of the US MGM-140A ATACMS missiles were found in the area of the attacked airport in Berdyansk. These missiles have a range of 165 km.
According to some Russian sources, along with ATACMS, the Ukrainian army launched ground-based small diameter bombs (GLSDB).
Both the GLSDB and ATACMS can be fired by the M270 MLRS and HIMARS systems already in service with the Ukrainian military. The range of both exceeds 150 km. The area most likely to be hit by the missiles is the Zaporozhye region.
In late September, several media outlets reported that President Joe Biden had assured President Vladimir Zelensky of the imminent delivery of the first “small batch” of ATACMS. On the afternoon of October 17, Mr. Zelensky thanked “some partners” for providing some “effective weapons.”
